When organising the Crampton Reunion in 1988 I advertised in many of the newspapers throughout New Zealand for people named Crampton to contact me if they were interested in a reunion. This resulted in 250 people attending the reunion in June 1988, 125 years after Mary Ann Crampton came to New Zealand following the death of her husband John. One of the responders to those newspaper adverts was a lady called Dorothea Crampton Graham, aged 86, (b February 17, 1901, d March 9, 1995) and she sent me the following letter which provided me with information that showed she did indeed belong to the Gentry part of the Cramptons - April 9, 1987 35 Gray Avenue, Paraparaumu Beach Dear Mrs Winsloe, I was most interested to read in our Evening Post of 31st March, your article re the Crampton Family - of which you are a member. My mother, now deceased, was a Granddaughter of Sir Philip Crampton, Surgeon General of Ireland, many years ago now of course. He was knighted by Queen Victoria because of his great medical skills and lived for many years and practised in Dublin. He was a very tall man, stood 6 ft 2 in his stocking feet!! And much loved. He had five daughters and no sons, so the title ceased at his death. My mother was very proud to be a granddaughter of Sir Philip so much so that our family of four, 3 girls and a son all had the name Crampton included in their names at the time of Christening. I was christened Dorothea Crampton Collett but Doreen for short. My parents both came from Dublin when young I do hope you will find these ramblings of interest and perhaps there is a relationship!! I would love to hear from you if you are interested in these ramblings!! And to hear your Crampton history too. Yours sincerely, Doreen Graham
