Mrs Fanny Gallagher (maiden name – McConnell; Father William, Lettercagh/Lettercau) DOD – 28th December 1923?
I would be grateful for any assistance/advice with my family history research. Through my research I have become aware that my paternal grandmother’s death although taking place on 28th December 1923?. is entered in the Dunfanaghy Superintendent's Register for the district of Gweedore page 1 – 04375292-25 in July 1924. The cause of death is recorded as influenza, 1 week; no medical attendant and was reported by her husband Manus Gallagher of Thorr, on the 29th of July 1924.
Having obtained newspaper reports for this time-period (December 1923 to March 1924) the newspapers state my paternal grandmother “starved to death” – numerous editions of the Derry Journal and Irish Independent newspapers reported on my paternal grandmother's death and the death of Patrick Doogan (accidental death by drowning). These two deaths and the plight of the surviving members of both of these families resulted in “The Gweedore Relief Fund” being set up in January 1924.
My father James and his five siblings were the Gallagher children recorded in the newspapers as was their father, Manus Gallagher, Thorr, Gweedore – my paternal grandfather.
I would be grateful if you could offer any further insight on "The Gweedore Relief Fund” that was set up in January 1924 and if you could tell me which graveyard my grandmother is most likely to be buried in!
Many thanks
Anne

Dear Anne:
Many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site. I will pass on this post to one of our local volunteers who will be able to assist you.
If you are willing, your post would make a very interesting timeline event for the Gweedore area. You can click on the link below:

Hi Anne,
Welcome to Ireland Reaching out!. I am afraid I am not from the Parish of Tullaghobegley, but saying that I would be from a Parish not so far away within Northwest Donegal. As Jane rightly said, this is a very interesting event within the locality, something that will be well worthwhile looking into and documenting further. I will be sure to look into this and get back to you as soon as I can this week, where hopefully I will have some information that may be help to you.
Kind Regards

Thank you very much for your prompt response & interest in my post - “The Gweedore Relief Fund” set up in January 1924 - Gallagher & Doogan families of Thorr, Gweedore
I am delighted to post this in the timeline event for the Gweedore area; I can also supply newspaper extracts from various newspapers concerning this event if they are of interest?
I will be happy to share my research data & thank you once again for any insight you can offer.

Hi Anne,
I hope you dont mind but I edited the event somewhat to reflect the wording within the newspaper extracts that you attached below. I also created a resource folder to house the newspaper clippings and a photo that is relevant to Gweedore at that time. You will be able to still edit and add to it as you wish. It is a great timeline event. I have looked numerous times but I could find no more information available than what your research supplied. I havent got a chance to check out the graveyard search yet but I am sure I will possible get this done this weekend.
Best regards, Seamus Callaghan (Kerrykeel)

Thank you very much for all of your work, I do not mind your editing in the least and am very grateful for the time and care you have taken in creating a resource folder to house the newspaper clippings and a photo that is relevant to Gweedore for the time-period, your input is much appreciated:)
I have several other newspaper clippings which I have attached below, if you think they are appropriate they can also be included, if not, please delete them.
My sincere thanks in advance for your assisting in tracing my grandmothers grave, it really is very much appreciated as I hope to visit Donegal later this year and pay my respects at her grave.
Keep healthy, happy & smiling

Hi Anne,
I have searched and searched and unfortunately, I can't seem to find a grave location for Fanny Gallagher anywhere, and I was wondering would you like to double check, so as to be sure.
This is the site best used for searching: DONEGAL Graveyards: Irishgraveyards.ie
Here is a map showing the graveyard locations, and the closest graveyards to Tor seem to be Annagry or Gweedore, that is if she was laid to rest there and not at the workhouse in perhaps Donegal Town, which could very much have happened.
The graveyards throughout the north of Ireland seem to be well documented on the website, however what you will see sometimes is that in some graveyards, the really old ones especially, is that old plots containing family members from generations back are sometimes changed to a family name plot rather than keeping it as an individual, whether it is to do with restricted space, I don’t know. http://www.irishgraveyards.ie/locations.html
I have added some information on the location for Townland of Tor, Parish of Tullaghobegley, which would be interesting to have, and any records I could find for your family.

Many thanks for your reply with so much useful information :) please accept my sincere apologies for the delay in replying but this was due to the early arrival of my beautiful grandaughter:) Mum, dad & baby are all now at home and settling in to family life; proud gran & grandpa are also settling in to their joyous new roles:)
Much like yourself I have been unable to find a grave for Fanny Gallagher but I will continue my search. It's very useful to know that the closest graveyards to Tor are Annagry & Gweedore as I am unfamiliar with the "lay of the land" in Tor.
Like yourself I suspect that my grandmother, Fanny Gallagher may have been laid to rest in a paupers grave at the workhouse? I will try to find out if there is a record of the souls laid to rest in paupers graves at Donegal Town Workhouse; does this worhouse graveyard cover Stranolar ? The reason I ask is that the surviving members of the family were taken to Stranolar County Hospital and I wonder if she was taken to this area for burial?
My sincere thanks for all the research and information you obtained on the Gallagher family and the Townland of Tor, Parish of Tullaghobegley, this is all extremely useful:)
I think I owe you a pot of tea and some home-made cakes:) until I can make it over to Ireland please accept my sincere thanks and know that you and all the other volunteers assistance is greatly appreciated:)
Keep healthy, happy & smiling
