Seeking information on the Lyons families of Donegal Ireland in the early 1800's. My great great grandfather Alexander Richard Lyons came to the Province of New Brunswick in Canada in the year 1835 with his wife Martha Matilda Doherty. They were Protestants/Presbyterians. His obituary says he was from Donegal Ireland.

  • Stuart,

Tithe Applotment Records have Alexander Lyons in the parish of Inver in 1825 - Townland: Legan/Legans (Leagan).

Inver is on the road to Killibegs from Donegal town.

You can access those records at  www.nationalarchives.ie/Genealogy - Free site

The name also appears in Griffith's Valuation 1850's for the same townland (Leagan) - www.askaboutireland.ie - Free site

  • Stuart,

There were still Lyons farming in Leagans in 1911. They were Church of Ireland (Anglican).

The local Church of Ireland (parish of Inver) has baptism & marriage records starting in 1793, so if that’s the right family you may find a marriage and the children’s baptisms there. The originals are held in the RCB library in Dublin, plus PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast has a copy of those from 1805 onwards. My guide to Church of Ireland records says rootsireland (pay to view) has “some years” but does not say which years are covered. To access the copies in the RCB library and PRONI you need to go in person, or pay a researcher to do that.

  • Thank you McCoy and Elwyn for your kind replies very appreciated. I live in Canada so it's difficult for me to understand the areas and where to access potential records.

I am so very thankful that you both reached out!

    Have a wonderful day!

    Cheers!

  • Stuart, et. al - I am a Lyons in Florida. I am searching my lineage and know that my 4th GGrandfater was Daniel Lyons, baptized at St. Marys in Cork, 1792. It is unclear to me where he moved about through the years, or his parent's names. I know that he migrated on a ship with his sons in 1852 from Tralee, to New York. They eventually settled in Ohio. The children's names were Florence (son) James, John, Daniel, Thomas, Jerry, and Hannora although I am not certain she was a Lyons and later married Florence. Maternal names connected with the Lyons are Scannel, Hagerty, and West.

Any help is appreciated. Mark Lyons, gedmatch# xp2748861.
