My Gt Gt Grandparents Robert and Jane (nee HAMILTON-ASH) ALGAR and their family lived at 30 Palace St.in the first of the 19th century, possibly before.

My Gt Grandfather, James Sturgeon Hamilton ALGAR was born there on the 19th April 1837. He died in 1900. As all other siblings pre-deceased him I believe I do not have any direct relative's in Drogheda.

My Grandfather, Alexander (Alick) ALGAR b1870 came to Australia in the 1890s. His sister Alice Jane ALGAR b1867 married William Plunket CAIRNS in Drogheda/Stameen,1886. She died 27//12/1952.

I am travelling to Ireland next month, on an ancestral pilgrimage, to "walk the walk" of my ancestors, whom Internett records show are buried in St Peter's Graveyard. ie. except Gt Aunt Alice (nee Algar) CAIRNS whom I believe is buried St Marys, Meath.

As I am travelling alone I would be grateful to have contact with any local, who may be interested to share some more of the historty of Drogheda with me. After a tour of the country and some time spent in Dublin,  I will be coming to Drogheda and staying at the Scholars Townhouse from Thurs 20th to Monday 24th September 2013. I would dearly love to meet you.

Kind regards, from Aus, Miranda (nee ALGAR)

  • Hi Miranda

I will certainly meet you on your visit here. My email is ohalloran.pat@gmail.com

I actually live in Stameen and the Cairnes lived for a while towards the end of his life in what is now the Boyne Valley hotel.

The hotel you are staying in is close to Palace Street about 80 metres or less (90 yards).

There is a site you may not have seen and give lists of people living in Drogheda and I see Algars living in 30 Palace Street on the voters lists but with other named people.

See http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/  Search Algar on site.

Try this site which is interesting, also the Hamilton name is associated with a town 9 miles south of here.

    Regards

    Pat
