This one is a challenge as there is a discrepancy in family bibles and documents as to the maiden name of my father's maternal great grandmother, Alice T. King (two records say name was Cain.)

Alice T. King/Cain was born in Ireland between 1842-1845. Her parents' names are unknown, but her children were named after family members it seems, so that may give clues.

Alice was the wife of John J. Bossinger (born Ohio 1842-47) and the mother of Sarah Cully, Frances Renne (named for John's mother), Alice V. Keenan (named for Alice), Elizabeth C Renne, Mary Josephine Ogilvie, Alfred T. Bossinger and Ellen (Nellie) C. Eprhraim. The family initially settled in the Five Points of Manhattan, on Mulberry Street and also on Mott Street and Transfiguration RC Church did have some records, but only of their children.

Alice's death certificate is a bit hard to read, but it gives her date of death as November 13, 1897 at 3 pm. Her age at death looks to be 47, but that may be wrong. She may have been older than that. Calvary Cemetery has in her burial record that she was 47 also, but it does say she was born in Ireland.

The 1860 US Federal Census shows Alice as being 18 years old, so birth year would be 1842. She was married to John Joseph Bossinger and with an 8 month old daughter, Frances.

The 1870 US Census shows Alice as 27 years old, which would make her birth year 1843. Place of birth is left blank for Alice but John is listed as Ohio and their daughters listed as New York. So perhaps she didn't have proof of her birth in Ireland and stated she was born in NY to avoid problems in later census records.

The 1880 census gives her birth year as 1845.
It looks like it says Alice was born in New York and it says here that she was in the City 16 years (meaning Brooklyn?).
The 1880 census also states that she was born in New York, which we believe is wrong, according to family records. She died at 145 Green St./Ave., Brooklyn, Ward 17.
Both of her parents were born in Ireland, although their names are not given.
She died of Acute Nephritis.
Her daughter, Mary Bossinger (later Ogilvie) signed the death certificate.
Burial is at Calvary Cemetery.

The grave holds 12 souls, several are the children of Alice and John, in addition to Alice herself and grandchildren who did not live to adulthood. I am listing the names and dates here in case it might help with finding Alice's place in Ireland. John's family was Swiss. Anyway, here is the listing for Calvary:

  • Hi,

    Thanks again for your message.

Yes this one does seem more complicated as it will be hard to confirm any records that you do find without having an exact date of birth or surname  for Alice or her parents names. Once again, I would suggest doing a search of the following:

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ have begun a project to upload Irish church records to their site free of charge. However so far only Counties Dublin, Kerry, Carlow and parts of Cork have been covered.

Hopefully you will uncover something at one of these sites. In addition to the list of websites I have given you in my previous responses you should also check: http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/index.html it may give you some ideas of where else you can look.

    Best wishes,
