Ambrose McGuigan was my g g g g grandfather. He was born in 1767 in Evishaloughan, County Tyrone. ( not sure which parish that would be.) Ambrose had a brother Simon and they were both transported to Australia on the "Britannia" leaving Cork on 10th December, 1796. Ambrose was a political prisoner having been a member of the Defenders of Ireland. He was engaged in the Battle of the Diamond and also in the shooting of Major Cole Hamilton. Ambrose was a Dancing Master and it is believed that he also used the alias "Switcher" Donnelly. ( believed to be his mother's maiden name. I would love to connect with any relatives and/or would appreciate any further information. Thank you.

Evishaloughan appears to be in the parish of Termonmacguirk, according to some accounts. Possibly named Carrickmore today. Here’s quite a bit of information about Ambrose:

The RC baptism records for the parish of Termonmacguirk don’t start till 1834 so it is unlikely that there will be any trace of his baptism or that of any siblings.

Sorry but that server does not appear to be working any more. I don’t have any alternative way of providing a link to the data.

Hi Ambrose McGuigan is my grand father x four or five through his daughter Eliza. I know we have many relatives in the Braidwood Araluen area. As for from where Ambrose is from I took my parents to Carrickmore about 13 years ago and we were welcome by the folks there like long lost friends. Quite bizarre and warming at the same time. There was a chap who run a salmon hatchery there who had written a paper on Ambrose for Belfast University, from memory, and he was considered a local celebrity even after 230 odd years.
