I am Dennis Shouldice, decendant of George "Adam" Shouldys. (Shouldice?) who was a Peter Robinson Settler, departing Cork in spring of 1825 for Upper Canada. I am confident of Adam's decendents after 1825 and have tracked them thoroughly. What I am quite uncertain about is his ancestry. I could use some help.

Others Shouldice family members from Canada have researched this before and came to the conclusion that Adam was a decendent of Palentines who departed Germany in 1709, then arriving 1710 in the Limerick area of Ireland as tenant farmers. Soome records showed Adam born December 1, 1771 in Kilscannell Parish, Limerick.

That conflicts with his age as declared on his boarding permit for the Star in 1825 which showed him 44 years of age. I wonder if the age 44 declaration was a lie told on his application to Peter Robinson, as no one was acceptable if they were over 45 years of age.

I have attached an ancestry chart that was compiled by earlier Shouldice family members and from postings of others on Ancestry.com

I have low confidence in the genealogy as I have been unable to find certified evidence of Adam's parents, or any of his ancestry other than claimes made by others that many seem to embrace without certificates.

I am looking to find more evidence of truth.

  • Hi Des,

I too am descended from the Palatines in Rathkeale.

Irish genealogy can be very hard as many of our ancesters could not read or write, also for many differant reasons they lied about their age. I have found differences of up to 15 years in some cases. So it is highly probable that he lied
