Thomas Beirne was born in the parish of Dysart May 2, 1857. He moved to the US and married Mary Mee, whose family was from the Dysart area. His parents were John J Beirne (1810-1866) and Mary McDonnell (1833-1905). Sponsors at Thomas' baptism were Michael and Anna Kelly. I am searching for information about Thomas' grandparents (maybe Thaddeus or Timothy). I also hope to find other descendants of John and Mary who remained in Roscommon.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The baptismal records for Ballyforan/Dysart RC parish start in 1850 so we won't locate a baptismal record for John or Mary if they were from that parish originally. I located the 1839 Tithe listings for the parish and also the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing. Possibly you will find some clues in those records. I did find baptismal records for a Patrick 1851 Bridget 1854 Margaret 1859 (mother's surname McDaniel) and William 1861 and another Patrick 1863 (mother's surname McDonnell).

  • The McDonnells lived is Culleenirwan, which is documented in the listing. Griffiths shows a Timothy Beirne in Bredagh in 1837, but I do not know if this is a connection.

There is a Ballyglass townland in the parish and also a Cartronkilly. This map may be helpful to you. https://leitrim-roscommon.com/MAPS/dysart.html

  • The map is great! Thank you.

At least 4 of the townlands on the 1851 map are found on current maps. I know that our McDonnell ancestors were from Cuilleenirwan. There is an 1839 Tithe listing for Thady Byrne in CartronBallyglass. (I assume Thady would have been Thaddeus.)  Tithe listing exists for Timothy Byrne occupying 39 A in Breda (or Brida). The 1851 map shows Bredagh just south of Cuilleenirwan. Current maps show Bredagh 20 km to the northest of there.

As to Beirne vs Byrne, I find that there are numerous Tithe listings for Byrne in Dysart, but none for Beirne. Perhaps the official who recorded the listings standardized all the Beirnes to his preferred spelling.

i am hopeful that your guidance will lead to my confirming a tie to one of these men.
