My great-great-grandfather is Michael John Crowley, born 25 JUN 1867 in Ballyneen, County Cork, Ireland and died 15 NOV 1945  in Everett, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States. He married Ellen T Sheehan, born MAR 1863 in Skull, Cork, Ireland and died 27 NOV 1938. I am trying to figure out the generations above Michael John (1867) on the Crowley side and have hit a wall.

Michael and Ellen had a son named Edward Matthew Crowley born 7 Jun 1897 in Melrose, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA and died 15 Mar 1958 in Melrose, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA who is my great-grandfather. Also six other children, Michael John Jr (1892-1960), William J (1894-1971), John (1896-1896), Ellen C (1900-1994), Anne E (1902-1977).

Does anyone have any connection to them?

I believe Michael’s parents are Michael John Crowley born about 1840 and Ann Crowley born about 1841 in Ireland and died 27 July 1879 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States of America, but I am very unsure on them which leads me to further generations of confusion and I do not want to research too far if they are not accurate or related.

I searched on the free site irishgenealogy.ie for all 1867 Michael Crowley civil birth records in the Dunmanway registration district. Three records came up.

One of them (see second record at the link) was for a Michael Crowley born June 25 1867. His father was Jeremiah and his mother Ellen Donovan. They live in Inchafune townland in Ballymoney civil parish not far from the town of Ballyneen.

This has to be your Michael. Do you know the names of any of his siblings?

  • Ceecee,

Do you have a birth or baptism record from June 1867 for Michael Crowley? I would add that folks often did not know the year they were born, and information on records in the US that are self-reported, are not always accurate. From personal experience, I never take for "gospel truth" the birth dates found in US census records or on headstones.

I would search five years on either side of that 1867 date for his birth, and remember that Nancy is another name for Ann in the Irish records, so keep your eyes out for that.

I agree that his father is also Michael since he gave himself the "junior" suffix in the marriage record....or whomever was writing it down did.

    Regards,

  • Thank you to all who have helped so far. I appreciate the efforts and am looking into some of your findings. I do think he was a Jr, however, Michael Crowley Sr. and Ann Crowley aren’t getting me anywhere, so I’ll try Jeremiah Crowley and Ellen Donovan and see what that uncovers.

Carolyn, I do have a baptism date for Michael J Crowley however it is for June 12, 1867 which wouldn’t make sense if he was born June 25 but, like you mentioned, those dates could be incorrect.

  • Ceecee,

I didn't mean do you know his birth/baptismal date, I meant do you have the actual record that one could find on irishgenealogy.ie under the church records tab as well as the civil records tab (civil birth records begin in 1864)? Parents had a month to register a birth with the civil authorities before they were fined, so sometimes you will see discrepancies in the records if they didn't do that in time. Personally, I would not tackle finding a new set of parents for him other than what he named in his marriage record because I would think a 23 year old man could recall his parents'names.

    Regards,
