(Ann) Elizabeth/Eliza Horan

I just discovered that Eliza was born in Ireland though I have no idea where and I don't know how to start looking.

Her father was Martin Horan (born 1817?)and mother was Mary Malone (born 1826?). Birth date is November 14, 1867 I believe; she died in Chicago November 1, 1915.

Siblings may have been Catherine, Mary, James, Edward, Ellen, Martin, Rosane and John.

She married Nicholas O'Connor in 1889 in Chicago from what I can find.

All this time, it was thought that she was born in Ontario, Canada!

Civil registration of births started in 1864. I searched the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie from 1864-1868 for Anne/Elizabeth/Eliza Horan birth records. There were 27 possibilities but none of the records listed the parents names you provided.

I also searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland for church records (all years) across Ireland but did not find baptismal records for any Horan children with father Martin and mother with the maiden name of Malone.

The surname Malone is primarily found in Co. Offaly, Co. Laois, Co. Mayo and Co. Galway but was found in other counties in the mid-189th century.

I assume you don't have any other family information.

    Have you considered DNA testing?

The 1910 US Census shows Elizabeth was born in Canada. What info did you find recently pointing to Ireland as her birthplace?

  • Her notice listed in the Cook County, Illinois, U.S., Deaths Index, 1878-1922 lists her birth place as Ireland....under the name Eliza O'Conner.... which is where I thought that she was then from Ireland.

Perhaps only her parents were Irish?? and assumptions were made by whoever provided the information?

I'll check the U.S. Census...........sometimes they are accurate/ sometimes not, as well.

My son did the DNA test and it shows only that he has Irish ancestry but nothing specific from what I understand.

    I'll keep looking. Thanks.

Likely Elizabeth provided the info to the census taker in 1910. I agree that when she died the informant was likely confused.

I don't know what company you son tested with but he should have matches from closest to more distant. I would contact the closest matches and see what side of the family the match is on. Maybe you will have some matches with people with Horan/Malone connections and they have more info on where the family originated.

Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org are great resources. FamilySearch is free but  Ancestry is a subscription site but maybe you can get a free trial.

    1900 census also shows Canada.

I noticed the head stone for Nicholas and Eliza on FindaGrave and saw that Nicholas was from Co. Kilkenny.

I did a search and found a January 16 1848 baptismal record for a Nicholas Connor with father John Connor and mother Kate Shea. The RC parish was Slieverue and the family lived in Glass House. This info sounds very familiar. Did you post in IRO for Nicholas?

  • Hi Roger.....yes, I did post about Nicholas and you helped me find baptismal dates for three of the children in that family. Eliza is his wife who I always thought was born in Canada..possibly to Irish parents though. The obituary surprised and confused me.  Once again, thanks for your help.
