Ireland Reaching Out - www.irelandxo.com

Hi folks this is my first post on here and any suggestions would be very gratefully received.
I have been trying to trace the birthplaces of two of my Irish ancestors for a number of years but am having great difficulty in deciphering the handwriting on the only document I have found that seems to show them.
The snippet (attached) is from an 1871 document - it is the birthplaces of John and Mary Tully I am desperate to decipher.
I have typed below the text I know to be true - the bits I would love to know are those indicated with a question mark.
Many thanks in advance.

John Tully, Head, 64, Labourer, ?, Ireland
Mary Tully, Wife, 40, Labourer wife, ?, Ireland
Thomas, Son, 19, Labourer, Warrington
Edward, Son,  16, Labourer, Warrington
Catherine, Dau, 12, Scholar, Warrington
Luke, Dau, 10, Scholar, Warrington
Mary, Dau, 6, Scholar, Warrington

Is it possible for you to scan the document so we can enlarge the image? Warrington townland is in Co. Kilkenny.

  • Enlarged image attached.

The Warrington location referred to is the Warrington in Lancashire, England.  It is the two birthplaces at the top I am am interested in determining, those of John and Mary Tully who were born in Ireland (Mary possibly in the Galway area). Mary was John's second wife who he married in England so there is no guarantee he came from the same area as Mary.

    Any help gratefully received!!

Mary may be from Fuerty in Co. Roscommon which is a town and a civil parish. John appears to be from Killcureen but there is no townland with that exact spelling.  www.seanruad.com has the complete list of townlands. I would focus on Co. Roscommon for now. I'll keep looking for possibilities but maybe others will have a better suggestion.

  • Thanks Roger.

Do you know if Fuerty is anywhere near Galway as it was rumoured Mary came from there?

A possibility for John I think is Killeeneen?

    Any other suggestions are welcome!

Fuerty parish is on the border with Co. Galway. I found a townland called Killerneen in Addergoole civil parish in Co. Galway which appears to border Roscommon. Let me dig out my OS maps of the area and see if I can see if Killerneen and Fuerty are close.

Fuerty is north of the Roscommon town of Athleague. The Galway border is a few miles to the west.

Killerneen was not as close to Fuerty as I hoped. Looks like they are 20-25 miles apart. Killerneen is to the west not far from the Galway town of Milltown. The Mayo border is to the north and the Roscommon border off to the northeast.

Let me know if you want me to do more

  • Thank you for taking the time to look into this for me Roger - it's much appreciated.

Mary was John's second wife who he met in England so the fact their birthplaces are a fair distance apart probably doesn't matter too much. His first wife was a lady called Nancy Boyle and all I know about her is she was born in Ireland.

I guess I now know the rough vicinities they came from which is a great starting place, my understanding is however that I'm unlikely to have much luck finding out more given the condition of Irish records in the early 1800s.

Still onwards and upwards (and hopefully backwards!)
