UPDATING my Catherine CANTILLON/CANTULON/CANTILEN/CANTLON etc. from KERRY.

She named her father as PATRICK, with brothers PATRICK & JOHN and sisters HONORA, BRIDGET, MARY, ELLEN.

I will try to copy this open board message to there also.

She was a famine convict, on the ship 'Midlothian', in 1853. Born circa 1835

The third last convict ship, ever, to Van Diemen's Land (TASMANIA) AUSTRALIA.

She married William CLARK/E

I descend from their eldest daughter Jane.

I have tested on FTDNA, MY HERITAGE and ANCESTRY.

One of my cousins from another daughter, Catherine/Kate had corresponded with a BARRY & CANTILLON descendant in the 1990's. who was certain we were from the same family.

I finally managed to contact another member from the same CANTILLON line two years ago and was provenly assured we were NOT from their BARNABY CANTILLON line.

It now seems, my cousin's first guess of the family from FARRAN, in the civil parish of KILLURY, KERRY is correct.

Namely PATRICK CANTLON  who married KATHERINE DOOLIN

At the Parish church, CAUSEWAY, on 18 November, 1816, by the Rev Denis TEHAN.

Patrick's father may be JOHN.  Katherine's parents are given as PARTICK DOOLIN & ELLEN FERRIS

Katherine's baptism was 1796 in Causeway. (Don't have the date to hand.)

The family given below, add two more children.  MARGARET & RICHARD.

This year on Ancestry I have suddenly gained THREE DNA matches to a CANTLON family in America.

They name their ancestors who came to America as JOHN PATRICK CANTLON known as PATRICK and wife MARGARET CRONIN.

Son of the above named Patrick Cantlon and Katherine Doolin. Baptised 10 May 1830 at Causeway.

JOHN PATRICK CANTLON died on 1 November, 1914, COLUMBUS, OHIO, USA.

They give a son JOHN PAUL CANTLON born 29 August, 1866 in the same place.

His descendants are my matches.

I have researched a little and I believe the eldest son JOHN stayed in Kerry.

I believe he is the JOHN baptised 26 May, 1817 - and I believe he may be the John who died 2 July, 1870, Causeway, Kerry.

All help and advice will be much appreciated,

    Hello Wynnette,

I looked up subscription site Ancestry, but could not find anything on the family.
However there is a very active FaceBook Page which you might find helpful - see link below.

    Good luck with your research

  • Dear Clonpriest,

Thank you very much for replying and your suggestion.

I have belonged to the County Kerry Genealogy FB site for several years and have posted this family to them regularly.

I am also on other Kerry and several County or Names, FB Irish DNA sites.

Too many to remember their full names and links.

I will gladly check out your link to make sure I am not missing any helpful group.

(I have six known direct line Irish ancestors, arriving between 1797 and 1879 from at least five different counties - I am over half, Irish DNA.

Supposedly 75% Irish, Scottish and Welsh.  Welsh is given as 1% <grin>.

I have two male "Swimmers" of unknown origins or how they arrived in Australia.

Both could possibly be Irish, as one married and Irish born girl, the other a first generation Aus. girl with an Irish parent.

    I am 7th Generation Australian.)

I did have a reply many years ago re Cantillon, but the person could only refer me to a particular family that was NOT tested, nor on the site.

I have now proven, through these few DNA matches, that we were chasing the wrong family.

It was originally through an enthusiastic correspondent of my cousin's, back in the 1990's who sincerely believed we belonged, and we looking at a Castleshannon, Causeway, family.

This was proven totally incorrect when I finally managed to contact another member of that particular family in 2021 who knew their family line back to a BARNABY Cantillon.

As I mentioned in my previous post, these DNA matches, one of whom I know is definitely alive, have never answered my messages.

    Frustrating.

    With kindest regards,

Wynnette Ford, nee Mansfield.  Wynnette Mansfield on most genealogical sites.
