Greetings,

I'm planning a trip to Ireland in September for business and ancestry tracking.  DNA reveals I'm 96% Irish and I certainly look it!  Based on my Bent family (yep, Anglo-Irish) origins in Taghmon, I'll be visiting the area and wanted to see where John & Bridget Bent lived.   They had land Tithe registered in the early 1840's:  John Bent, born 1809, wife Bridget, son Peter (1834?), James (1836), John (1840).  Confusion whether Bridget was maiden name "Ward" or "Coffey"?  In any case, trying to find their home base/church/any Bents in the area?  I'm not familiar with searching Irish resources so I thought I'd try the Ireland XO network.  After Taghmon, I'm off to the Toole, Reilly, May, and Feeney origins ... lot of Irish branches, yikes!

Thank you for any information and recommendations!

I searched the subscription site FindMyPast.ie and found two baptismal records of interest. Both were in the Piercetown RC church records. Piercetown parish is just to the east of Taghmon parish.

Peter Bent baptized June 30 1832 father John Bent mother Bridget Ward

James Bent baptized June 21 1836 father John Bent mother Bridget Ward

I did not locate a marriage record.

You mention a Tithe record. Can you share the details?

  • I found a probable marriage for your John and Bridget - see the last entry on the right hand page (NLI Register images), John Bentt married Bridget Ward 23rd March 1832 at Piercetown & Murrinstow/Murrinstown RC parish Co. Wexford. There are no residences recorded..

The Catholic parish of Piercetown & Murrinstow/Murrinstown  is on the coast of the Irish Sea just south of Wexford town, in the 1830s the RC parish covered a number of Civil parishes, i.e. : Drinagh, Kildavin, Killane, Killmacree, Rathaspick and Rathmacknee.

A search of the Tithe records for these civil parishes shows a Mary Bent at 'Bouliallagh' in Rathmacknee, a closer look at the entry shows her recorded as 'Widow Mary Bent' holding just over 4 acres of Tithe eligible land - see the 2nd last entry on the page image.

It appears to me that the transcript of the place name is incorrect - I dont see an 'i' and  first letter is a bit like a 'P' rather than a 'B' , this would make sense as there's a townland in Rathmacknee civil parish named Pollsallagh which appears to be a good match to the Tithe entry. this townland is a short distance to the east of the town of Murrinstown, see entry on the placename database, most of the village of Piercetown is split between the townlands of Piercetown and Pollsallagh.

I've included directions from the New Ross Road Roundabout just outside Wexford town (on the ring road) to Polsallagh townland see this link.

For reference the town of Taghmon is located about 12km (~7.5 miles) to the west of Pollsallagh and Piercetown etc
