Have been working on Bergin & Curley line for 30 years.  My GG GF John Bergin (b: Jan 1816) left Ireland June 1841 with his uncle, James Curley (born Roscrea ? 1780), his 10 Curley cousins, & his sister Hannah (b: 1820).  JB's tombstone as well as that of one of his cousins stated that they were natives of "Barna Parish, County Tipperary".  As far as I can determine there is no Barna parish in North Tipp, at least not in Ikerrin barony, where they originated.  We have found one of the Curley dau baptism listing James Curley as father & Catherine Bergin as mother, & living at that time in Ballygorteen, just So of Roscrea.  We are lucky to have been associated with the Curleys as that name is rather rare in No Tipp & has given us a direction in which to go.  Based on Irish family naming patterns, viz a vis names of John Bergin's children (m: Maryann Fox b: Ire ~ 1822), his parent's names might be Patrick & Margaret & they presumably remained in No Tipperary.  As far as the "Barna" question, I think it is either: 1.) the Catholic parish in No Tipp on Offaly border was Dunkerrin Union with "chapels" at Dunkerrin & Barna - both in Offaly, or 2.) it's the civil parish of Bourney, aka Bournea ---> does Bournea on the Irish tongue in mid 1800s sound like Barna.  My choice of Bourney results from the Curley dau baptism listin address as Ballygorteen which I believe is in Boruney civil parish.  Can any "Tippers" or Offaly folks give me a hand here?

  • Jack - Many thanks for your responses & my apology for such a long delay in my response (17 months). So, your info from Roscrea Reg Office certainly gives me pause in regards to the "rarity" of the Curley name in No Tipp. Maybe I have to rethink the whole scheme. What do think of my thought in the original query about Barna/Bourney/Bournea? Would entertain any thoughts you might have. Thanks much
