I'm looking for more information on my grandfather's family who lived in Roscrea. My grandfather's name was William Cronan Bergin, born 27 Oct 1918 in Parkmore, Roscrea. He died 7 Aug 2011 in Newton abbot, Devon. His parents were John Bergin (1874-1950) and Johanna Maher (1878-1936). He seems to have been an only child. Rumour has it he left Roscrea soon after his mother died. He certainly was in England and had joined the British army by 1947.

I have traced his father, John's siblings, in particular Thomas Bergin (1881-19 Jan 1966). Thomas lived in Ashbury, Roscrea and I believe members of Thomas' family still live in the area. I'd love to make contact and see what they know of my grandfather or any family history.

Grateful thanks,

simon

  • Simon,

You probably have these records already, but just in case...  I have found William Cronan's Baptism and Birth Records.  I got the Baptism records from the parish register.  The website I use to locate birth/death etc certificates is https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/, but is having access issues at present.  The site is free and you can download the record pages from it.  I'm attaching records I've located so far.  I haven't located any entries for Thomas yet - he doesn't appear on the parish register of Baptisms but that could be because the family originally came from outside the parish or were just baptised elsewhere.  I searched for possible burials, but as yet have'nt located either John or Thomas.

    Regards,

    Dick

Thanks ever so much, Dick! I didn't have the baptism of William, so this is lovely to find. John Bergin and his brother Thomas were actually born in Bleakfield, Shinrone, Co Offaly. As for burials, that is a mystery but I once heard tell of a burial ground in Ardcroney- but I don't know if real or even if they are actually buried there.

Thomas Bergin was living in Ashbury, Roscrea until his death in 1966, apparently he was quite well known in the area at the time. But I don't know deatils.

Thanks again for all you help, really appreciated.

  • Simon,

Attached updates as promised.  It has Thomas' Marriage Certificate and Death Certificate as well as a baptism record for his son Edward, who was born in 1931 and is stated to have been present at his death in 1966 - unfortunately due to GDPR, birth records beyond 1919 are not currently freely online.  I also located Hannah Maher's birth and baptism records. Also John's birth certificate and their marriage certificate.  The file contains some maps of where Bleakfield is through the "ages" and some new information and certificates. It also contains all the Certificates located so far in A4 format for ease of reading etc.   I also spoke yesterday with a person living in Ashbury to see if any further information could be got.  It turns out that her mother lived in No. 12 - Thomas' house!  She's to ask her aunt if she has any info on your family.  I'll let you know the results as soon as I have them.

    Regards,

    Dick

  • Dick,

I'm absolutely astounded by your kindness- thank you so much! I'd have never found Hannah Maher's parents- I tried looking but never considered looking under  Anne, but it makes sense. Although I never met him, my grandfather was a good man and it's fantastic learing about his family. I'm really grateful. The map of Shinrone and the info really helps putting the family in situ and context. Thanks again!

Simon, attached some maps of Blakefield and a bit of local history!  The house in Ashbury is in the same family's hands that I believe took over from Thomas.  I'll post you whatever I find out from them.
