Bernard was born around 1861 and joined the RIC. Any information about his parents would be appreciated: His marriage Certificate lists his father as Bernard . Thank you. Mary

The Bernard Conlin who retired in Tyrone was an interesting man. This information on him and his family is taken from Jim Herlihy’s book: “Royal Irish Constabulary Officers – A biographical Guide 1816 -1922.” Publ 2005. I have included the information on his 2 sons who were also RIC Inspectors.

  • Thank you very much Miriam:the information you provide is for Bernard. We have much detailed information about Bernard from the time he joined the RIC until his death in 1934. We have been unable to find his parents or his precise date of birth. One of his grandsons explored all possible links with the RIC over a number of years and did not manage to find his parents. Hearsay suggests that he was related to Thomas H. Conlin who perished in The Titanic RIP.

Thank you very much for your suggestion. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Thank you very much Elwyn for the excerpt about Bernard and his family. We know so much but cannot establish who his parents were! Thomas Henry lived with his uncle Edward Conlin in Philadelphia . Edwards wife was also from Co Cavan. We have doubts about the claim that Bernard and he were brothers. We have no evidence either way!

Thank you again for your help.

  • Mary,

I had a look in the Killeshandra baptism records for September 1861. (The biography says Bernard was born in Arvagh then). There’s no baptism for him in September 1861 so clearly that information is suspect.

  • Hi Elwyn

We have a record from RIC Historical Society which states that Bernard was 18yrs and 7 months when he joined on 27/04/1880. Native County : Cavan( connected in Monaghan)

He was recommended by Sub Inspector Bigley, Bailieboro.

He died in April 1934 . His age is recorded as 72 yrs.  Arvagh was linked with Thomas H.Conlin and was highlighted in 2012.

As mentioned , marriage certificate records his father’s name as Bernard also. Maybe Arvagh is wrong for place of birth? Thank you for your interest. Mary
