Interested in information on my 3rd great grandfather Bernard (Barney) Murray. His date of birth from census records is around 1820-1822. I did find a baptism record for 9 May 1821, Cavan, County Cavan so that may be him. If so, his parents were Thomas Murray and Anne Keogan and had siblings Patrick, Mary, Michael, John and Mathew. Barney emigrated to NYC and arrived on May 7, 1855. There, he married Margaret Johanna Kelly from County Tipperary and they had nine children. Barney had a suucessful contracting business and he (or perhaps his son Bernard) was involved in NYC politics as a Tammany Hall delegate. He did have a brother Michael who also emigrated to NYC,  other siblings may have as well.

I would to love to confirm his date of birth, parents and other family and also to find out about Murrays and Keogans in the area.

Thanks very much,

Claudia Dean

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

You may have the correct record but I wanted to point out that at least 22 RC parishes in Co. Cavan (out of 31) do not have baptismal records starting 1822 or earlier. It is very possible that your Bernard Murray was baptized in one of those parishes and the records were lost.

Can I suggest that you post Bernard's emigration story on our XO Chronicles site and possibly someone will see a connection  https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • Roger,

Thanks very much for the information and suggestion - I'll post on the Chronicles site as well.

I have done both Ancestry and 23 and Me DNA testing and naturally have tons of  "relatives" but have yet to find a definitive Irish connection. Are there other DNA sites that might be more useful?

  • Claudia:

You could load either your Ancestry or 23 and Me raw DNA data to a volunteer site called Genesis Gedmatch www.genesis.gedmatch.com   Genesis Gedmatch will provide matches with people who tested with other companies such as Family Tree DNA or My Heritage and also loaded their data to Genesis Gedmatch.  One of the frustrating issues I encounter particular with Ancestry DNA matches is that people never get back to you when you send a message. Many of the people who test with Ancestry are content just to know what their ethnicity breakdown is and are not interested in working on their ancestral tree.

  • Roger,

Will do - great suggestion. Yes, I've written to several people on Ancestry and have heard nothing, even those who do have a family tree but have it private. It is frustrating since they may have they key to my missing pieces. In any case, I'll keep at it and am very grateful for the Ireland XO community's assitance!

  • Once you have the DNA on Gedmatch, you can search Facebook for DNA Roscommon - a lot of the counties have set up Facebook Groups to use a match tool to narrow matches to localities.

  • Hello Bernard,

Perhaps we are related! Do you know approximately when your ancestors might have emigrated?

  • Mary,

Thanks so much for the helpful suggestion. I had never heard of these groups, so you all are such a great resource.
