My name is Michael Edwards, I live in Shrewsbury Shropshire England. 2 years ago, following the death of my Father we started to look into my Mothers heritage. This would give Mum something to focus on, helping her transition into her new life without Dad. Our search started with documents that Mum had including a funeral card for Bernard Salmon. Bernard Salmon is Mums 4 times Grand Father and we were surprised to find that he was buried in the Calvary Roman Cemetery New York USA. Bernard born 1836 was married to Mary Salmon (McDermott) born 1839 moved separately from Ireland to Wolverhampton West Midlands England. We got in touch with Simon Briercliffe who is social and cultural historian who is researching the contribution of Irish people in the West Midlands. Simon told us that Bernard and Mary Salmon were one of the most important Irish families of the post famine diaspora in the Black Country West Midlands. The Salmons were founding members of the Brotherhood of Saint Patrick in Wolverhampton.

It is highly likely that Bernard is from County Roscommon and we have found that Mary is from Tibohine Buckill County Roscommon. We believe that her parents are Johanis McDermott and Elizabeth McDermott (Farrell) but we are not sure.

We recently visited Ireland for the first time and stayed in Swineford County Mayo where we met some wonderful people including Mairin Noone who was a tremendous help in our search. We visited Tibohine old Graveyard Ballaghaderreen where we found grave of Patrick and Mary McDermott. Patrick and Mary we believe to be Johanis McDermotts Brother and Sister in law. We cleaned the gravestone and I have included pictures. We met Tim McDermott a resident of Tibohine and we hope that he is a relative.

We have uncovered an incredible history of Irish people from Countys Roscommon and Mayo in Wolverhampton around the mid/late 19th century. I am happy to share with the group if you are interested. We understand the reasons why people left Ireland during this period but we lack concrete facts about the McDermotts of Tibohine and nothing of the Salmon family. Can you please help?

  • Michael:

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and located two baptismal records in Co. Roscommon. Also, some RC parishes do not have records back to the 1830s.

Bernard Salmon baptized March 12 1834 in Aughrim RC parish father Dennis Salmon mother Eleanor Morris

Bernard Salmon baptized October 8 1835 in Loughlynn RC parish father Timothy Salmon mother Winifred Salmon

Are you aware if Bernard had siblings?
