Good evening,
I hope that you are all keeping well. Once it is safer to travel, I plan to revisit Ireland and visit areas and parishes that can help be breakdown one of my ancestral brick walls.
My ancestor, William Bertram/Bartram, was born in Ireland about 1777. He came to Canada in 1820 aboard the ship “Commerce” from Ireland by way of Greenock, Scotland. At the same time, John Bartram and Henry Bartram settled on lot 7, concession 12 of Lanark Township (source - land records); Abigail Bartram is probably the female recorded with Henry on the passenger list. We believe they are William’s children from a previous marriage.
William's Ontario records indicate that he belonged to the Church of England.
The transcription of John's headstone in Cataraqui Cemetery in Kingston says he was the son of William and Eleanor Bartrim, County Cavan. I speculate that Eleanor was the name of Williams' first wife.
Moreover, William's second wife, Jane McKeague/McKague, was born in about 1807 in Ireland. Unfortunately, I am not entirely sure where in Ireland. On Ancestry DNA, however, I have matched with over 30 individuals from one particular McKeague branch:
1) FAMILY LINE ONE: Alexander McKeague (~1765) and Jane McKenna
2) FAMILY LINE TWO: John McKague (~1754) and Jane Wilson (~1774)
3) FAMILY LINE THREE: William McKague (~1756) and Mary Parr (1775)
4) FAMILY LINE FOUR: (Speculative): Andrew McKeag (~1734) and Mary Shaw
From what I can find, this family of McKeague's come from County Cavan (near Shercock, or Baillieborough). One resource mentions that they lived and attended Coronneary Presbyterian Church in County Cavan.
I don't know too much about my Bertram routes as I have been hitting brick walls. I was hoping that researching the McKeague family could help me narrow down areas in County Cavan where I could do some digging.
Before I can make my plans to Ireland, I would love to narrow down where in County Cavan the Bertrams can be found, and if any still exist today? Any help in researching this Bertram family would truly be appreciated.
Kind regards,
Kris
Kbert

Hi, Kbert.
If you have ancestry.com, take a look at my tree: Paulding Family Tree #1
First, the only thing I can prove is that Robert McKeague/McKaigue is my ancestor (born about 1778 and died 1879 in Beglieve/near Bailieborough, Ireland).
I believe Jane McKague (McKay) was either Robert's sister or first cousin. She was born about 1806 in Ireland (probably County Cavan) and died 1868 in Ontario.
She married William Bertrim (born about 1775, possibly in Drummore, Armagh, Northern Ireland... and died 1870 Ontario).
If Church of Ireland records exist, you may find them online.
www.ireland.anglican.org (The Church of Ireland Library and Archive is in Churchtown, Dublin)
Good luck!

Hello Kbert,
Thanks Carmel for alerting me to this post. I forwarded this post on to CP above who has already replied. My ancestors attended Corraneary Presbyterian Church.
They lived in the townland of Cullies which is about five miles from Shercock. My line may well be the family line you have at number one, Alexander McKeague
and Jane McKenna. As with CP above I am also on Ancestry.
Best regards,
Leslie

Hello CP,
I hope that you had a relaxing weekend. Thank you so much for your reply and for sharing this information with me!
I'll definitely take a look at the links that you shared as well as your family tree! If Jane is Robert's sister or first cousin, we are definitely related.Do you have any known ancestors who have taken the Ancestry DNA test?
Kind regards,
Kris

Hello Les,
I hope that you had a wonderful weekend. Thank you so much for your reply and for providing me with this information.
That is so great to hear that you are connected on the Alexander McKeague and Jane McKenna line! I would love to check out your Ancestry tree. How can I find it?Lastly, I have looked at a few McKeague trees online, and some speculate that Alexander and Jane had a daughter named Jane. I hypothesize that this is my Jane.
Thank you again!
Kind regards,
Kris

Hi, Kbert.
Do you have a tree on ancestry.com?
I match some ancestry.com members who descend from your family lines 1, 2 & 3.
I also match some ancestry.com members who have William Bertrim/Bertram and Jane McKeague in their trees.
The DNA matches have helped me to know that an ancestor belongs in my tree, but...HOW the ancestor fits is sometimes a mystery.
For example, I have many matches linking me to John McKague (b. abt. 1754) and several linking me to his brother, William (b. abt 1756). However, a concrete connection to my tree remains unclear.
So, good luck with your investigations, and take care.
