Hi,

I have a question regarding my Great Grandfather - George Hodgins.  His military record states his birth place as Drogheda, Ireland.  But then the census record for 1911 states his birth place as England.  I can't think of any logical reason why this would be.

Anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks.

  • Hi

The name is found in Drogheda so that shows he may be local. The birth records for civil registry start in 1864 in Ireland and if you have the date you can go to the http://www.groireland.ie/ and order on line for about 4 Euro or try the Irish Times at http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/ but you must purchase credits or http://www.rootsireland.ie/ which again requires credits or Family Search which is free.

If not on Irish records try the English one.

Census forms were often filled out by the person collecting them so maybe an error or possibly he was born in England and brought up in Drogheda, there was a lot of trade shipping and ferries between Drogheda and Liverpool at the time.

the Parish for ?rogheda is St Peters in Co. Louth but the Diocese of Armagh while south of the Boyne River the parish is St Marys and the diocese is Meath. South Drogheda is in two counties.

if he was born before 1864 then you will have to rely on church records. All,on the sites mentioned.

    Regards

No sign of a birth for George Hodgins in Co Louth c 1869. Therefore England seems likely to be correct.

Possible marriage for George Hodgins to Margaret Gregory registered in Drogheda, Jul - Sept 1891, Volume 2, page 381. The marriage cert should give you George?s father and other information that may enable you to take the line back.
