I am not only looking for distant relatives but also ancestors of William Borland and Rachel Brady. Ed and Alice Laing had written a book called Pioneers of Clearsprings. Chapter 6 is "The Borlands of Clear Springs" (2001)and consists of 4 pages Which were sent to me as pictures. I’m not sure how to add them to this post.Unfortunately Ed has passed away and Alice  is in a nursing home. However, their son Ray and his wife Bertha still living in the area.

I am the great great great great grand child of (1)-William,born 1747, was 48, and their mother, Rachel Brady, was 45 when (2)-Alexander Borland and his twin sister Elizabeth were born in 1795. (William and Rachel had seven children in 17 years.)Alexander married Charlotte Neill in 1830 in his hometown. Alexander and Charlotte came from Ireland and emigrated to Canada. They had 8 children. Thomas , William,( died 1859 in Ontario at age 64)John, Jenny, Robert were born in Ireland while Paul, Lyle, and Mary were born in Goulbourne, Ont. , Canada. Their son, (3)-Robert Borland, was father of (4)-William Borland, who married Florence Pearl Skillen. William had 2 children, a son, Leslie, who married Lottie Jacobs and adopted 2 girls, Gail and Rita, and daughter, (5)-Dorothy. Dorothy married Royce Murray, had 7 children (6)-Betty, Linda,  Brian,  Gordon, Jean & Joan( twins), and Mark.

Betty married Herbert Andrews, they had 3 natural children and one adopted(7)- me(Kimberly, 1959) my brother Kenneth, 1960, Heather, 1962, and Laurie(8)-my kids,Kathleen (Kathii 1977),Terrence(1978), Christopher (1980), James(1983),Kenneth (Paul)(1984), (9)- my 9 grandkids. James has Shianne( January 2003), Charlotte(September 2003), Zachary & Kaley(twins, August 2004); Kathii has Kyle(1994), Ethan (2004, Aidan (2005)

That’s 9 generations accounted for.

So my grandkids are the great great great great great grandchildren of the first Borland’s to come to Canada, Alexander and Charlotte, and great great great great great great grandchildren of William and Rachel.

My new problem is trying to find where William and Rachel cane from. The book says Alexander’s hometown is Belloma Ireland but when I google it I find nothing. I also know that Alexander leased his property in Ireland prior to emigrating. It is listed in some places that Alexander and some of his children were born in Landhead Ballymoney, Antrim, then they were in the Goulbourn township, Carleton County, Ontario in 1842 where the rest of the children were born.

(I do know that one part of the family changed their name to Boland while living in Russell.)

  • Kimberley,

The Rev Park compiled a census of the parish of Ballymoney in 1817. That census does record 3 Borland families in Landhead. They were in consecutively listed properties and so may well be related.

    William Boreland Head of Family

    Else Boreland Wife

    Robert Boreland Son

    Rachel Boreland Daughter

    Sarah Boreland Daughter

    Robert Boreland Head of Family

    Jean Boreland Wife

    Rachel Boreland Daughter

    William Boreland Son

    Widow Boreland Head of Family

    Alexander Boreland Son

The only one that might fit your information could be the one headed by Widow Borland.

Robert, Alexander and William were all farming in Landhead in 1825, according to the tithe applotment records:

By the time of Griffiths Valuation in 1864 there was just 1 Borland farm in the townland. That was plot 2 held by William Borland. It was a 25 acre farm. It was later merged with plot 1 to create a 38 farm. That farm today is on the Kilraghts Rd, near Landhead school. It straddles the Belfast – Coleraine railway line.

No Bor(e)lands in Landhead by the 1901 census:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Enagh/Landhead/

Looking at the Valuation Revision records, William Borland is listed as tenant of that farm till 1907, when he was replaced by Ann McKeague. However he wasn’t living there in 1901 and I don’t know what happened to him. I can’t find a death that fits very well.

You haven’t said what denomination your Borland family were. In addition to the Church of Ireland, there’s 6 or 7 Presbyterian churches in the area. The Church of Ireland’s records start in 1807 and 1st Ballymoney Presbyterian in 1817. None of the other churches has records for the period you need (ie pre 1850). There’s a copy of the Church of Ireland and 1st Ballymoney records in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast, but you need to go in person to view them.

  • Thank you all for your hard work and donating your time for people like me to find answers. I have recently come across another piece for the puzzle. Thomas Borland, born 18,October,1824 was christened 1 November 1824 at First Ballymoney Presbyterian Church.

  • I am researching my niece's ancestry in Ontario, Canada. She is descended from Robert Borland, born Co Antrim c. 1795, brother of Alexander in the post listed above. Robert married Jane Cochrane and had 7 children born in Ireland (1815-1827) and 1 born in Ontario (1831). I have the Canadian research done, but I want to confirm the Antrim ancestry. I was wondering if the person who posted the information about Alexander could provide the source for the following information he or she posted:

"(1)-William,born 1747, was 48, and their mother, Rachel Brady, was 45 when (2)-Alexander Borland and his twin sister Elizabeth were born in 1795. (William and Rachel had seven children in 17 years.)Alexander married Charlotte Neill in 1830 in his hometown. "

Interesting note: just found this posted about parentage of William: https://familypedia.wikia.org/wiki/John_Boreland_of_Kilraughts_(-1778)
