We are having a challenge find more out about my great great grandfather, James Edwin Boyle.  He was born in Ireland in 1838 and came to US sometime before 1859 (date he naturalized) into New York City.  We think his parents names were John Boyle and wife Christina.  All we have on his parents is a document stating Davis, St. Peters. We were always told that our Boyle clan was from Cork, but we aren't sure.  When James Edwin Boyle came to the US he served in the military during the Civil War, and then worked as a police man in NYC.  He was married to Mary Quinlan and had at least one child, my great grandfather, names James T Boyle.  He could have gone by John.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • Dear Karen,

I just did a quick search on  www.rootsireland.ie and there are 5 James Boyle's born in 1838 Ireland with a father named John Boyle, unfortunately none of them in Cork, saying that rootsireland might not have this record yet.

Did find a marriage registration of their daughter Christina L Boyle 1887 Richmond New York, so the name Christina could be in the the family on one of the sides but no guarantee that this was the name of James's mother yet.

I found the army enlistment, pity it does not give more information like the later army records do.

Does the naturalisation record give the full date of birth of James?
