My grandfather, Thomas Joseph Boyle, was born in Fedamore, County Limerick, in 1894 and emigrated to the United States in 1884. He was the son of John Boyle and Mary Mahoney. The rest of the family emigrated within a few years. I have noticed that there are very few Boyles in County Limerick and therefore wonder if my Boyle ancestors moved to Limerick from somewhere else. Does anyone know whether that would be the case? Does anyone have knowledge of the Boyles in Limerick? Thank you for your help.

Hi Mary,
Could you be more precise about the dates... was he born in 1884 or 1894, or did he emigrate in 1894?
Here are some statistics about the name Boyle from the period of Griffith's Valuation: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm?fuseaction=Go.&UserID=
You could also check the 1901/1911 census records to see more Boyles in the country. You can access this here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
You could check for your Boyle ancestors in a number of places.
Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.
Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.
Kind regards,

I am looking for the descendants of James Cavangh. I can't find his birth/baptism information (circa 1800) to identify his parents. I am not sure if he was born in Limerick or Waterford County (where the Cavanaghs came from). His mother is possibly Ellen (found in Tithes Aplotment in 1826) and his father is possibly Daniel (found with a James Kavanangh in Dollas in Griffiths Valuation). There is also a James Cavanagh whose birth information is in St. Michael's in Sept 15 1799 (from Roots Ireland).
James lived in Ballingarry until 1847 and went to Fedamore/Skule area (where his two children married in 1849 and 1852). His leaving occurred I believe because the weaving industry in Ballingarrry ended in 1845. James died in Fedamore in 1870. I cannot find James' wife's name, though she was born in Crecora.
James also took with him to Fedamore his two children, Elizabeth (b. 1829) and Patrick (b. 1827). I would love to find birth/baptism information on the children to verify their mother’s name, etc.
Though both Roman Catholic, James’ daughter—Elizabeth--married John Hayes on 17 Jan. 1849 in the Church of Ireland, Fedamore Parish. They had four daughters: Catherine (b. 1850), Johanna (b. 1855), Mary (b. 1859), and Bridget (b. ?). I have information on Catherine (who married Michael Ahern 20 Nov. 1874 and immigrated to Argentina in 1889 on the City of Dresden); but I need more information about Johanna, Mary (who had a son named John Roache and possibly also immigrated with Catherine to Argentine), and Bridget (who married an O’Connor from Bruff).
I also know that John Hayes’ father is Denis Hayes (who is also listed as a weaver on John’s marriage certificate and who is also listed on Griffiths Valuation with James Kavanagh in Ballingarry—near Dollas). I have found one birth record for a Denis Hayes with the father Daniel (as well as another birth record for a brother named Daniel—both sons of Catherine O’Dwyer who were born in 1798 and 1800), but I don’t know if this is the right Denis—meaning the father of John who married Elizabeth Cavanagh.
I would especially love to find out if any descendants of the Hayes daughters (Bridget and Johanna) are still living in Ireland. I would love to reconnect with them.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
