Hi

I had a question that maybe someone else has come across.  I have 3 children born to Richard (Dick) Bradshaw and Margaret (Peggy) Dwyer in the parish of Doon, Cashel & Emly.  The oldest child, Margaret, born in 1839 had her parents listed as Peggy and Dick, the next 2 children, Mary and James, born 1843 and 1846 parents were listed as Rich and Margaret.

I was wondering if these nick names could be the same parents for all three.  All 3 had the same rc parish as their baptism.

Glad to hear any thoughts on this.

Thanks,

Mary

  • Hi Mary . . .

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out . . .

    I had a look at your query . . . which I checked out on Ancestry  . . .  and yes . . I see the differance . . . as outlined  . . .

I see NO problem . . . Dick is usually the shortened version of Richard . . .and

    Margaret and Peggy . . . in Ireland . . . have always been interchangeable  names  ( for unknown reasons !! )

    Another curiosity cropped up . . . in my search . . .

    Usually . . I prefer to use the search engine . . ." Roots " ( paid) . . when searching . . .

    I just find it gives a fuller picture . . . than Ancestor . . .

    When I searched for these people . . . I failed to find ANY mention of their Births . . . on Roots . . . for unknown reason . .

    Keep searching . .

    Cheers . . . Eamonn.

  • Yes. Father is listed as Rich in roots.  I was pretty sure this was correct because I had 2 DNA matches, one to James Bradshaws family and the other to Margaret Bradshaw.  Thanks for your help.

  • Hi,

It's been a while but I am researching the Bradshaw and Dwyer line again and I found Richard Bradshaw and Margaret Dwyer's marriage in 1833 in the parish of Solohead and Oola.  I believe that the marriage usually took place in the brides parish, so I am assuming that Margaret is from Solohead.  She likely was born in 1804 (based on her death record) and parish records begin around 1810. Both Richard and Margaret death records were witnessed by Margaret Dillon, their daughter, living in Toomaline.

I found children I believe belong to them in the Tipperary/Limerick area:

John Bradshaw, baptized Oct 29, 1934, in Cappawhite, Cashel and Emly, address is Rafter Cottages

Margaret Bradshaw baptized Mar 16, 1839 in Carnihalla, Cashel and Emly, no address (married James Dillon and stayed in Ireland)

James Bradshaw baptized Apr 22, 1841 in Cappawhite, Cashel and Emly, address Caherballa

Mary Bradshaw baptized Dec 28, 1843 in Doon and Castledown, Cashel and Emly, address Toomaline (my 2nd great-grandmother, married Michael Mulcahy in 1863 in the same parish)

James Bradshaw baptized Apr 28, 1846 in Doon and Castledown, Cashel and Emly, address Coolnamona (dna connections)

They all have the same parents names, with the variations I mentioned previously, so I wonder if these addresses are near each other and why they might have moved around.  Also, based on naming patterns, would Margaret have named her 1st daughter after herself or maybe her mother was also margaret?  Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

    Mary
