Hi there,

I'm trying to trace my grandfather. The few pieces of information come from DNA matches on Ancestry and Google searchers. I know that at least 2 of the family were born in Roscommon in the early 1900's. So far I have:

Thomas Brennan (unknown)
Mary Fields (unknown)

Thomas and Mary's 6 children:
Patrick Brennan (1913–2005) - Born County Roscommon, Ireland. Moved to Boston US, date unknown
Marriage - 1949 to Mary Fahy (1922–2014)
Lived Hyde Park, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA. Joined a union of plasterers.

Thomas Brennan (1920–2010) - Born County Roscommon, Ireland. Moved to Boston US, date unknown
Married Christine Twomey

Josephine Brennan (Unknown) - Moved to Birmingham UK, date unknown - Married James Edward Hogarty - 27 Nov 1921 Ballinrobe, Co Mayo, Ireland, died 981 Birmingham, West Midlands, England

Mary Brennan (unknown)
Michael Brennan (unknown)
Peter Brennan (unknown)

Any help/tips would be fantastic.

Many thanks.

Stuart.

  • Stuart,

Mary's surname is Sheil, not Fields. Attached are the civil marriage record and the birth records for some of their children...I did not find Josephine's.

  • Stuart,

Josephine was married in 1921, so she cannor be the child of Thomas Brennan and Mary Sheil as they married in 1911. On the marriage certificate for Thomas and Mary, it shows he was 40 years old and a bachelor....so Josephine could be his child from another marriage. Normally, it would say widower and not bachelor if he was married previously.

  • Sorry, should have made the text more clear. 1921 was the birth date of James Edward Hogarty (Born 1921 - died 1981). They married around Jan 1950 in Birmingham UK.

  • Stuart,

The civil birth registrations ceased in 1923, so Josephine was probably born after that year.

  • That's great Carolyn, thank you so much.

One question, what resource are you using? I can't find any of this on Ancestry. Maybe I'm searching it all wrong.

  • Stuart,

I found this information on the free site irishgenealogy.ie under the civil records tab at the top of the page. It is pretty simple to use..the civil registration district you put in the box is Strokestown. Another useful site to figure out what the correct registration district is, is irish-genealogy-toolkit.com.

There is a good feature on the Irish genealogy.ie called "other search options" where you can just enter a surname, birth year range, civil district, and mother's surname; and it will show the children. You can do that with your family, and you will see what I mean.

I think it did not come up on Ancestry because you had the mother's surname incorrect. The home page of irishgenealogy.ie details what years are available for births, marriages, and deaths.

    Regards,
