Hi,

Bit of a long post so my apologies at the outset.

I am trying to find information about my great grandparents, Patrick Brennan (1839 - 1902) and Ellen Bulger (1843 - 1913).  The year of birth Is based on their age shown on the death certificates as I have no birth records for either of them.

I have found just the one record of a marriage between a Pat Brennan and an Ellen Boulger.  This was in May 1859 in Leighlinbridge which I realise might not be my great grandparents.  According to the marriage record, they were living at Raheendoran.  However, I understand that my Irish ancestors originated from the Kilkenny area and the 1911 Census for Ellen indicates she was born in Carlow.

Just to provide a little more flesh on the bones, I know they lived in Carnarvon, Wales for a few years, where my grandfather, also Patrick, was born in 1870 and great uncle Peter in 1866.  My great uncle Edward was born in 1872 in Bangor.  Not sure where they were after 1872 until they appear on the 1891 Census in Kendal, Westmoreland before moving to Yorkshire at the turn of the century.  Both  died in the Liversidge/Heckmondwike area.

Is it possible that anyone could identify birth records from what I have provided?  Also, are there any records available which might tell me when they came to England/Wales.

One final piece of information from the 1911 Census for Ellen is that she had 10 children, 6 who were still living, 4 who had died.  I have only ever found the 3 born in Wales.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

It is possible that the ages provided on the death records were understated.

Civil registration of births and RC marriages started in 1864 in Ireland. I assume you looked for a marriage record in Wales?

The couple who married in 1859 had twins John and Mary born in 1860 and another son James in 1862 all in Leighlinbridge. I also found a Michael in 1864 in Co. Wicklow with the same parental names. Do any of those names match what you know?

I don't think we will find a baptismal record for Patrick Brennan or Ellen Bolger without knowing their parents names. The names are too common.

Movement between Ireland and England/Wales was internal within the British empire and records were not maintained.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • There was a marriage on 26.11.1882 at St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, Dublin between James Brennan & Catherine Hussey of 1 Potters Alley, Dublin. His parents are named as Patrick Brennan & Ellen Baulger of 20 Hammond Lane, Dublin. Could that be the same family? Did they go back to Ireland for a while and that’s why you can’t find them in English or Welsh records for some years?
