Looking for some help before I get to Ireland in September!

John Brosnan and Mary Roche were married 23 Feb 1830 Castleisland, Kerry. Son Michael was born 2 Jan 1935 Athea, Limerick. He married Bridget Mulvhill, born 1 jan, 1835, also Athea, daughter of Michael Mulvihill and Margaret Heffernan, maybe Jan-Feb-mar 1850.

Michael and Bridget had 11 children, born between 1859 and 1881. the records for the kids alternate between Tarbert, Kerry, and Athea, Limerick.  All immigrated in 1883, arriving in Quebec, traveling to Connecticut, before settling in Buffalo, NY. All are buried there, last name Bresnahan.

Margaret 22 Nov. 1859 Athea, Limerick

Mary 16 May 1861 Athea, Limerick

Patrick 3 march 1863 Athea

John (Brosnahan) 20 april 1865 Tarbert, Kerry

Bridget Delia Brosnahan 8 May 1867, Tarbert

Michael 4 May 1869 Tarbert

Johanna 3 June 1871 Athea

Hanora 25 May 1874 Limerick

Thomas 28 March 1876 Athea

James 2 Sept. 1878 Athea

William 26 Apr 1881 Athea.

I will be visiting Ireland (!!!!) Sept. 17-27 and will be in Athea/ Tarbert area on the 24th. Any help in finding family in that area would be greatly appreciated!

  • HI, Nancy--I have Ahern/Ahearn ancesters from around Athea.  I remember the name Mulvihill because in the 1901 and 1911 censuses it shows my gg-grandparents, Jane and John Ahern, had a son-in-law by the name of Michael Mulvihill (born around 1874) married to their daughter, Mary.  Also, I recall seeing a Mulvihill living with some of my Ahearn/Ahern relatives in the US, either New York or New Haven in the early 1900s.  Do you have any Ahearn connections in your genealogy?  thanks!

  • Interesting! My Brosnans and Mulvihills are earlier. Bridget and Michael were born 1835. But, what is interesting is that they arrived in Quebec 1883. I have this info from another cousin:

    message from Harry Flynn 01/2010
Here is the info I promised you. The Bresnahan family departed Galway, Ire. on the ""Hanoverian"". They left Ireland approx. May 21, 1883. Arrived Quebec June 30, 1883. The trip took 39 days. They are listed on pg.3 of the ships manifest as follows: Bresnahan,M; Bridget; margaret 23; Patrick 21; John 19; Bridget 17; Michael 15; Johanna 13; Hanna 11; Thomas 9; James 7; William 2. They booked passage to Toronto but I haven't found when they arrived in Toronto or how and when they arrived in New Haven, Conn. They left New Haven in 1889 for Buffalo.

Michael (the dad) lists his immigration as 1880, so he traveled ahead of the family.

IN 1900, Williams lists his birth as Connecticut, but not true. So, the fact that you have relatives in New York and in New Haven and in Athea suggests a connection. I was just there 2 weeks ago (!) and took pictures of all the graves I could find with Mulvihill/ Brosnan/ Roche/ Woulfe on them. I may have a stone you need!

  • Spent a day in Athea, and I want to thank everyone (especially Father Bowen) for a wonderful experience. Learned a few things, made a few corrections.

All records are at Athea. Anything with Tarbert is a different family (how close? 2 Bridget Brosnahans, one 8 May, one 10 May, both dads Michael, both moms Bridget Mulvihill).

didn't find any stones, but did take pictures of everything I could find in the cemetery. Hopefully, someone can make a match!
