William Brett, b. about 1830 in Ireland, died 1872 in Ontario.

He married Catherine McCoy, b. between 1841 and 1844 in Ireland, died 1918 in Toronto; they had two sons in Ireland before emigrating to Canada - John (Jack), b. circa 1862 and William, b. circa 1864.

Catherine's middle name was spelled many different ways Keough/Keohn/Kough on various papers.

Jack married my Great Aunt and had two children.

The extended family would love to know where in Ireland William and Catherine came from.

Civil registration of births, marriages and deaths started in Ireland in 1864. You mentioned that young William was born around 1864. I looked at www.familysearch.org for birth index records for a William Brett in 1864 and found two which are below. Athy is in Co. Laois and New Ross is in Co. Wexford. No idea if either rrecord is related to your family. If you want to pursue further, you can write to the GRO www.groireland.ie for copies of the birth records. Fill out their form and provide the year, registration district, volume and page number. Should be around 4 euros per record.

  • Thanks so much for your reply - sorry it's taken me so long to say it.  Too often, I forget about familysearch.
