Bridget Carroll

Hi Mary, Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out.

I have had a look at trying to source records for Hugh or Bridget Carroll, that emigrated to Australia, back in the 1850’s but I don’t seem to be having much luck with this so far. I have shelved this for the moment to see if maybe I can help you try to connect to any Carroll family that would still be living on Tory Island or living in Parishes nearby.

Tory Island can be found in the Parish of Tullaghobegley in North-West Co.Donegal. I have attached a link below that will take you to that Parish Page on Irelandxo.com - https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland/donegal/tullaghobegly

As regards Carroll families there were two families living on the Island of Tory at the start of the 20th century. One of these was a James Carroll and the other was a John Carroll, who was possibly a brother.

I attached a photo of a Carroll Family Tree I put together, just to display these two families and how they would possibly be related to Hugh, Bridget and  Anne carroll. Tory Island is a small community so it wouldn’t be hard to see how they would have been related.

I used https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/, to see what records I could source for the children. Given time there are loads to be sourced. I came across a marriage record for Sarah Carroll who would have been was a daughter of James Carroll and a Birth record for Owen Carroll who would have been a son of John’s (below).

I will ask to get this Message attached to the Tullaghobegly page, as this will increase the chances of making a family connection. If you have a copy of the Missing Friends advertisement that was placed in the Australian Journal back in 1888, that would be worth adding here. The best recommendation I could give  going forward is to keep gathering as much information as can be found on Carroll families in Tory and reach out and share it politely on the one or two facebook pages available for Tory Island. Thanks for all your information.  I have found two Bridget Carrolls who lived in Ireland both Bridgets were transported to Australia on the convict ships,   I don't think they are the Carroll family I want as in the Missing Friends article Hugh arrived with Bridget unless he was on the convict ship.

Hi Mary, That is interesting. There is every possibility that these Diver, Doohan and Carroll families may be related, and the chances are high that they all came from Tory Island also. You can see here that they are the same family names you would find on Tory Island back in the early 1900's.

Thanks for posting up the Missing Friends advertisement that was placed in the Australian Journal back in 1888. I attached it here as a photo, as it was upside down and hurting my neck..lol

I have come across a Tory Island facebook page that would suit your needs perfectly and although it hasn’t been used for a few years you should find it easy to share this message and your family story how your they hailed from Tory Island back in the day. There are a few members following the geneology page so there is nothing to lose. Post this message up and keep your fingers crossed. All locals from Tory are lovely people!
