Hi

My paternal Great Grandparents were Bridget Duffy and John Mulloy, they were married 16 June 1890 in Bury, Lancashire but both were from Longford, Ireland.
From the marriage cert i know that Bridgets father was Bernard and Johns father was also John.
I know Bridget had a sister Margaret as she was at the same address on the 1891 census as 'sister in law'
Bridget and John had 3 children, John William 1892, Annie 1895 (my Grandmother) and Mary Ellen 1899.
Bridget John and son John ended up in the Bury Union workhouse whilst Annie and Mary Ellen were placed in the Hollymount School at Greenmount.
John died 1915 in the workhouse and Son John died 1919 in the workhouse.
Bridget left the workhouse in 1916 and I have not been able to trace her since then.
Annie and May Ellen remained in Bury, Annie married John Ward Holt but Mary Ellen did not marry, she became staff possibly a nun at Hollymount and died 1946.

Questions
1 who were Bridgets parents.....Bernard and ? DUFFY, what part of Longford did they live, i think Bernard may have been a farmer.
I have followed several Bernards but not resolved.
2 Who were Johns parents......John and ? MULLOY, where in Longford did they live.
3 where did Briget go to after leaving the workhouse in Bury?
4 Did John and Bridget move to Bury together or did they mert there?
5 When did they move to Bury/Lancashire

I have found dna links from my Ancestry dna to Johanna Duffy (Gilnagh) and the descendents of Johanna and Hugh Gilnagh in New York so i wondered if Johanna and Bridget were sisters. Having found the marriage cert for Johanna and Hugh Gilnagh, this shows Johannas father to also be Bernard Duffy.
I am currently thinking Bridgets parents could be Bernard Duffy and Maria Whitney????.
Any help to smash down my brick wall would be very much appreciated.
Jacqui.

In the 1891 census, how old was Bridget and also Margaret? There are twins born in 1860 to Bernard Duffy and an unnamed mother but from other baptismal records, it would appear the mother was Mary McCabe. The twins were named Bridget Rebecca and Catherine Margaret. They had older siblings but no Johanna. The RC parish was Mullinalaghta. Records were located on the subscription site Roots Ireland.

The only John Mulloy baptismal record on Roots Ireland in Co. Longford which makes sense was the following:

John Molloy baptized March 7 1849 father John Molloy and mother Elizabeth McCarthy RC parish Longford town

How old was John in the 1891 census?

  • Hi Roger
Thank you for your reply and research
John was 30, Bridget 29 and Margaret 22
Prior to the Whitney line i was following the McCabe line. But then i picked up on Johanna and her dedcendents from my dna. I have dna connections to several of Johanna and Hugh's daughters under their married names.

I found five baptismal records in Drumlish RC for children of Bernard Duffy and Mary Whitney: John 1862 Mary 1863 Peter 1866 Catherine 1877 Elizabeth 1877. I then checked the Drumlish parish register and there was a gap in baptismal records from 1866-1874. I started looking at the civil birth records for Margaret, Bridget and Johanna Duffy from 1866-1874. There were no Johanna Duffy birth records. There were three Margaret records but not with Bernard and Mary as parents. However, I did find a Bridget Duffy record in 1870 and for whatever reason she made herself much older on the 1891 census then she was in actuality.

see last record Bridget 1870  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

I also looked for John Mulloy but no records with father John.

As an aside, there is no way to know if John and Bridget went to England or what year they emigrated. Ireland was part of the British Empire and no records were kept on crossings back and forth.
