I can answer a few of your questions. By the way, the spelling of the townland is Ballykeroge and there are two by that name: Ballykeroge Big ( 447 acres) and Ballykeroge Little (158 acres).

Power was/is a very common surname in Co. Waterford. I was able to check Kane and Keane in the 1901 census for Waterford and there were over 90 people with the surname Kane but over 560 people with the surname Keane.

Civil death records are available on the free Irish government site www.irishgenalogy.ie  Images of the actual records are available from 1878-1969 but for 1864-1877 we only have index records at this time. We expect that more images will be added in the near future. Your family lived in the Kilmacthomas registration district. However, there are so many Patrick Power and Bridget Power records, I have not yet found the death records for Patrick and Bridget. Your family does not appear to be in the 1901 census for Ballykeroge Big or Little. Likely the parents were buried with young Edward in the local cemetery for the parish.

I did not find a death record for Michael but it would have been pre-1889 since Bridget was shown as a widow.

There are no Irish records available (beyond the civil records) around 1890 for the children.

Thank you, Roger, for the links to more research!  I know it is hard to find POWERS in Waterford County......and am trying to let geography help.

Our John Joseph (son of Patrick Powers and Bridget Kane) met his wife in Ireland.  She was Norah Leahy of Newcastle, Tipperary.  THey met in the 1880s-1890s and planned immigration to USA (they married in St. Patrick's Cathedral NYC June 1898).  She arrived earlier than he did........and they married as soon as he arrived.

SO, how did they meet in Ireland at that period of time?  What did young singles do at that time?  How far would they walk to meet others?  Did they have church dances?;  Is there a church in between Newcastle and Ballykerogue (Big or Little)?  Newspapers might be likely for them because I know they both knew how to read/write........

I looked at Google Maps and assuming I have the correct Newcastle in Tipperary, it was 37 kilometers to Ballykeroge Little. A decent distance in those days maybe six hours to walk and two hours on a bike, etc.I'm sure there are a few churches between the two locations. There were social gatherings where they could have met. Maybe there was a family connection in some way. Norah worked with a relative of John or vice versa.

Roger, do you know anything about an area called Four Mile Water?  Wonder if it is between the Rossmore/Newcastle home of the Leahy family and possible Ballykeroge Little home of the Powers family......

Had begun reading a book about Four Mile Water on Kindle.....but it begins with information mostly about ancient times- the back and forth fighting in the area.   Have not yet found any items that I could use in my search for connections........I plough through a few pages and close the text......not as easy a read as an old newspaper.

Do you know of any old Irish newspapers that might have been digitized?  Since Norah and John knew how to read and write (saw a school register in Newcastle that included Norah as a student), I wonder if they accessed newspapers from the area........

Good morning, Roger!  Thought I recalled your Maryland connection!  Wild storms here last night on Long Island!  Yes, it is just so typical of summer- HHH weather!  Glad it was overnight rain- it let me get out early today and do some overdue gardening!

Mom is 88 and has a few stories of her grandparents from Waterford-Tipperary......but the stories are starting to change......think she incorporates dreams with her stories!  Her grandfather had such a brogue that the spelling error on his wife's death certificate shows how misunderstood he might have been- her maiden name was spelled COLAHAN when it was KELLEHER/KELIHER.  Makes sense to me- like the folks who interviewed arrivals at Castle Garden and Ellis Islland!

She recalls conversations about the towns of Clonmel and Dungarvan (from her father).........I think those were the "BIG" towns of the day....and that her family lived out in the country.
