I am trying to find out what became of Bridget, born in Limerick, after her husband, Daniel Sweeney (McSweeney), Coast Guard drowned tragically off the Coat of County Antrim in 1868. Also their son Hugh Sweeney, who was discharged from the navy about the time that his father was drowned.

  • Yes, thank you. These articles are about my Great, great grandfather, Daniel (Mc) Sweeney's tragic death along with the other Coast Guards and boatmen. I have two similar atricles. The information on WikiTree will be the profile that I put there. What I want to know is what happened to his widow, Brdget (Moylan) Sweeney, born about 1819,  after her husband's death in 1868. She would have been a very poor widow, I don't know what happened to poor widows in Ireland during 19th Century and I can find nothiong about her after that date, not even any record of her death. She was born in Ballingarry, Limerick, married Daniel mcSweeney whose name was changed to Sweeney when he was a Coast Guard at Beer, Devon, England. He was then posted to Torr head in County Antrim before moving further north where the drowning happened.

I am also trying to find out about  their son, Hugh, born 1845, a boy sailor with the Royal navy  for whom I can also find nothing after 1869 when he was discharged from the navy and was about 20 years old. The eleder son, Daniel, born 1850, was a boy sailor with the Royal navy and his records contain absolutely nothing!! God knows what ahppened to him at sea.

All this isn't that long ago really considering that my mother lived to 92 and her father to 91 and his father came from East Torr, County Antrim. He, John McQuilkin, emigrated to new Zealand with his wife, Mary Sweeney McQuilkin shortly before her father, Daniel was drowned.
