perhaps the simple answer is they just did not get along,  maybe the grave was full,  maybe if it is on the right hand side one was not a catholic...........there could be many reasons.................who died first?  my guess is that he died before his wife and that was a 'makeshift grave' but by the time she died they could 'afford' a proper grave.............hope this gives you some food for thought.  also, you could write to the town council in Carlow and ask them to look in the 'graveyard' book and see if there is anything written in there..............write to:

hi,  thanks for that information. Ive been curious since I seen where the plot is and that it's marked with a pressed metal headstone, he's on the end of a row of what I believe to be small crosses belonging to nuns. and as i said his wife and family are close by. I did try to upload a photo i took last time i come home.  thanks again for the address. jo
