Hi there,

I'm wondering if you've seen any Burkes appearing in your family tree.

I am trying to get in contact with descendants of any of the following:

  • Patrick Burke (b. March 13th 1872)
  • Bridget Burke (b. April 3rd 1874) who married Richard Durkan and had Patrick, Mary, James, Richard, Luke, Bridget, Michael & Martin (this family then moved to Lisbawn, in Bohola)
  • James Burke (b. September 30th 1880)
  • Margaret Burke (b. 1st Dec 1882)
  • Mary-Anne Burke (baptised*. March 1887) who married John Lavan and had Andrew & Luke
  • Martin Burke (b. 11th August 1887) who married Julia Moran
  • __________ Burke (don't know what gender the last child is)

I'd really appreciate any light that could be shed here,

Thank you to whoever reads this,

Daniel

*Mary-Anne is the only one that I can't find a birth cert for but I can find a baptism cert for, the "b" is born for all of the others

  • I don't think there's a townland called Lisbawn in Bohola parish, but there is one in the adjoining parish of Swinford named Lisbaun (same thing in Irish, An Lios Bán), which is about two-thirds of the way up the road from the town of Bohola to the town of Swinford.  So, if you're looking for records for that branch of the family, you might try Swinford instead (Swinford was the registration district for the civil records in the area anyway).  Here's a link to more info about that Lisbaun:  https://www.townlands.ie/mayo/gallen/meelick/swineford/lisbaun/

There's also a Lisbaun in Kilcolman parish, but that's further away from Bohola to the south, on the other side of Killedan parish:  https://www.townlands.ie/mayo/clanmorris/kilcolman/claremorris/lisbaun/

Two of my grandparents were born in that area in the 1880's, and I have relatives from Bohola, Killedan, Killasser, Kilcolman, and Swinford parishes, with several known Lavan, Durkin, and Burke relatives among them (and probably a lot of others, to judge by my DNA matches), but all three of those are very common names in the area, and none of my known relatives fit into the families which you listed.  I also have Loftus relatives from there, by the way (another common name in the area).

  • Hi there again Kevin,

Thanks for the correction, just got a little mixed up! It's the Swinford one that I meant. I would really love to see if we are related in some way because I have all of those names in my tree: Durkan, Lavan, Burke & Loftus

Hope we can try and work out a connection,

    Daniel

  • If you've had your DNA tested and have the results posted at GEDMATCH, you could check them against mine.  My kit number there is T780556.

I have family trees posted at several sites, going back to nearly 1800 (a bit earlier in some cases).  If you've got access to Family Search, that's where i have the most detailed records posted.  I also have trees at FTDNA and Myheritage, which are membershup sites.  There's a freely accessible tree at Wikitree, at this link:  https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Jewell-Family-Tree-1523

That tree has less detail about collateral lines, where the Loftuses, Burkes, etc. tend to be.  My mother had a first cousin named PJ Loftus who was well-known in the Killasser areas, in case that name occurs in your family.

  • Hi there,

Is it possible that you could import it into http://familyecho.com and then send me a link to it? Do let me know if you need help with setting it up. (You'd need to make an account for it first)

I'm finding it hard to look on your WikiTree and FamilySearch tree.

  • I'm not sure why you can;t get to my Wikitree tree, since it;s an open source site.  I just tried that url again, and it worked for me.  I notice that a clickable link didn't get created for some reason in my message above, so I'll try inserting it again here, but you can alwauys just copy the whole url into your browser and then hit "enter";:

    https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Jewell-Family-Tree-1523

I'm very familiar with transferring GED's from one site to naother, but I'm not familiar at all with the Family Echo site, and the link you gave me doesn't show any information about the site, except for a registration page, so I'm not sure I want to join there.  I'm pretty active in genealogical circles and have never heard anyone refer to it before.

  • Hello there! This is my first post, and first time searching Irish websites as I'm in the US. I actually was searching surnames here and my 3rd great grandmother is Ellen Loftus born 1854 in Ireland, she was also sometimes called Nellie, and her mothers name was Bridget Burke born 1826. Ellen and her mother Bridget were in Ohio, US by the time of the 1880 census. That is all the information we have here, we only ever knew Ireland, not a parish or county. Ellen passed away when my grandmother was a young girl, and I would love to be able to tell my grandmother more information about her grandmother. Please if any of these records match, please let me know. I will also try the tree you link to. Thanks in advance!
