Good Morning,

My husbands great grandmother was Mary Burns who emigrated to the US in1890. She was born about 1870 in Ireland. Her parents were Malachi and Margaret Shannley Burns. She also had a brother Patrick that emigrated to the US and also settled in Hartford, Connecticut. I don’t know if Malachi and Margaret ever left Ireland. Through remembrances of conversations of Mary’s granddaughter while growing up, County Roscommon and Toberpatrick House were shared as to where the Burns family came from. Any help you might be able to share with us would be wonderful. Thank you in advance for your help,
Cheryl Webb

  • Are you sure of the first name Malachi? I'm finding some Burns records with a Margaret Shanley as the mother. But her husband is not Malachi.

  • Toberpatrick House was located in Toberpatrick townland in Roscommon.  In Griffith's Valuation of Roscommon, there was a William Beirne living in Toberpatrick. I will send a link in a separate message.

Perhaps these findings might lead to your ancestral place. I hope so.

  • Thank you so much Patricia. The death certificate when Mary Burns died definitely stated that her parents were Malachi and Margaret Shannley Burns. I will check the links you have sent. Is there a map available that shows these town lands?

  • Hi Cheryl,

Go to townlands.ie and you can see maps of the townlands mentioned above.

About the name Malachi on the death record. Unfortunately, it is common to find errors on death records, particularly in the names of the dead person's parents.  Who gave the info? It obviously wasn't Mary Burns. Was the person in error, were they upset and grieving? Or did the person writing down the info make a mistake?

Do you have Mary Burns's marriage record? Sometimes such records give parents' names. In this case, Mary herself would have supplied them.

    I hope this is helpful.

  • Hi again,

Is it possible the mother's name is Glancy, not Shanley?  Found a Malachi Beirne with wife Margaret Glancy in Ballagh townland. They had daughter Mary born 1869. But I didn't find a Patrick.

  • Hello Patricia,

The name of Mary Burns parents on the death certificate was given by her husband Thomas Tracy. I also have the marriage license when Thomas and Mary married  Oct 10, 1893, but no parents names, only nationality of parents. I suppose it is possible that the name could be Glancy but I doubt it  on the death record. I have tried to look for Patrick Burns that was mentioned in the newspaper death notice but there are so many Patrick Burns in Hartford and I have no other information on him. I really appreciate your help. I will continue poking around on records I can find over here. It will be wonderful just visiting the county of Roscommon knowing that relatives once called this area home.

We will also be visiting in County Cork as through DNA my husband has found a cousin that lives in Walshtownmore. We have shared genealogy info by email and now we get to meet. We still have been unable to find out very much in Ireland on our William Kinniry, Bob's great grandfather. When he died in 1901 in Hartford his father was listed as James.

Again my heartfelt thanks for your help,

    Cheryl

  • Hi Cheryl,

Why don't you post a new query about Wm. Kinniry, giving whatever information you have?

  • Hello again Patricia,

I was able to pull up 2 Malachy Beirnes. One was in Ballagh townland, parish of Kilmore and the other was in the Parish of Kilglass in Derryfeacle townland. Also in Parish of Kilglass in townland of Derrymacstur is a Michael Shanley. Are these two townlands close?  Are you able to help me with what Catholic Churches would be near both of the Malachi Beirnes in Ballagh and Derryfeacle? That would make it easier for me to search baptismal records and look for Mary and then potentially find cemeteries. Once again thank you so very much for all of your help. You are wonderful to do this for me.
