Simon Byrne and Mary Wise/Wyse, my great great grandparents, married in New Ross, County Wexford on 28th April 1863. I think Simon was from Templeudigan but I can't read Mary's parish in the record (see highlighted word on extract).

Their first child, Elizabeth, was born on 21st February the following year and was baptised in New Ross.  Not long after this, the family moved to Liverpool, where my great grandfather, Peter Joseph Byrne (pictured) was born in 1868.

Mary's parents were Patrick Wyse and Catherine Murray. I have been unable to find a record of their marriage but I have found the baptisms of six children in the NLI records, baptised between 1838 to 1848. Interestingly, there are two named Catherine and two named Mary with no indication that the older child in either case died. In 1838 they lived in Oldcourt; baptisms took place in Suttons and Horsewood.

I don't know who Simon's parents were.

I will be visiting County Wexford in September 2019 and would love to find out more about my Byrne, Wyse and Murray ancestors. I'd like to hear from anyone who is tracing these families or can help me find out more about them.

  • Marriages usually took place in the bride's parish, so in most cases you would expect that Mary lived in the parish of New Ross, and was possibly also born these, so that placename could be the name of a street in New Ross town, or a townland in the other part of the parish outside the town.

Unfortunately the baptism records for the Catholic parish of 'Rathnure & Templeludigan' only go back to 1846, so if that's where your Simon was born then the records available start a little too late to include his baptism.

p.s. for clarity I would record the place of baptisms as parish. Diocese, County, smallest to largest land division - e.g. Suttons (Suttons and Horsewood/Ballykelly), Ferns, Co. Wexford.

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.

I have contacted the New Ross Library on your behalf and they will be very happy to meet with you when you visit New Ross in September.  You will find local historical resources there which may assist you with your search and they would also recommend that if you would like to look further, the Wexford branch has a microfilm collection of  newspapers and other material.  Tina Callaghan is the librarian in New Ross.  Their website link with opening hours, email address and other information is here:  https://www.wexfordcoco.ie/libraries/opening-hours-and-branches/new-ross-library
