My James Cahalens (as it was spelled on his marriage bond in Salem, New Jersey in 1761 married Rachel Howel (sic). I have spent years spinning my wheels on his origin, and I hope I have it narrowed down a bit. Can anyone help? I have my DNA online at Ancestry.com, and I believe we may link to Rosecommon. Names I have seen include those Surnames above, but repeatedly seeing JAMES, WILLIAM, JOSEPH, MARY, Elizabeth, etc. Is it true the first born son was named after the father, or was this something I just heard from another?
If anyone has the DNA test, and we match, please let me know. That would go back to the 1760's or before, so James Cahalens is my 4th Great-Grandfather.

I responded to another message you posted in Ardcarn parish regarding your Cahalans.
The first born son was frequently named after the paternal grandfather but this practice was not always followed. The third son was sometimes named after the father but again not always followed.
