Hello,
Can someone tell me if there are transcribed records for the RC parish of Caheragh, Cork? According to the NLI, the baptism records for this parish begin in 1818. I have searched on irishgenealogy.ie, Ancestry, and Roots Ireland (they do not have this parish) for transcribed records, but I cannot find any results for the person that I am searching for. The person is Michael Coakley (Coakly or Cokely), born somewhere between 1820 and 1835 with possible siblings of William and Timothy. I have seen the Tithe Applotment records as well as the Griffith's Valuation records for this person...in Dromore, Caheragh, Cork. That is the correct location that I am searching for.
Must I look through the records on the NLI to find him or are they transcribed somewhere?
Thanks for any help anyone can give regarding the need to pour over the hard to decipher NLI records or IF I can find a transcription. I do not know his parents' names, and there are various records on Ancestry that give different parents....all have the father as Jeremiah Coakley though, but different mothers.
Gratefully,
Carolyn

The registers for Caheragh RC parish, Cork & Ross Diocese have been indexed by FindMyPast and should also be on Ancestry - as you have probably already seen the early records are very difficult to make out so expect mistranscriptions and also spelling variations and errors in the originals. I doubt that any transcription for these could be fully accurate.
I tried a search using wildcards in FMP i.e. selecting the parish and entering C*k* in the surname option and found a number of possible Coakley children as follows :
Mary Cookley 1819 parents Jeremiah and Mary
Ellen Cockley 1824 to David and Mary
Margaret Cokely 1827 to David and Mary
Julia Cokely 1831 to David and Margaret
John Cokely to David and Mary
Ellen Cokely to Denis and Mary
etc
No sign of a Michael, William or Timothy in the correct timeframe that I could see ..

I have a note that there may be some overlap between Caheragh RC and two adjacent parishes - Skibbereen (Creagh and Sullon) and Aghadown/Aughadown - might be worth adding these parishes to your search area - luckily both have reasonably early records..
I had a look at that Tithe Applotment record for a Michael Coakley at Dromore, Caheragh, that record relates to a head of household in 1832, to does not really fit with the dates you have for your Micahel.

Shane,
Thanks for that tip about the overlap! I will check it out. Interesting that there are Davids as fathers because I also had that first name of David as a potential sibling to Michael on my tree, but I couldn't make that relationship work. I agree about the Tithe record not being "my" Michael...also think that the 1853 Griffith record is not his as he would have been too young. I guess it was just that name in Dromore that had me interested as my 2nd great grandfather, Michael Coakley, married Catherine Mahony in 1858, and they raised their children in Dromore, Caheragh....this is documented by oral Coakley family history here in the US.
To add to the confusion, some Ancestry trees show (without proof) that he was from Snave, Bantry. However, it is my understanding, perhaps incorrect, that one was born, married and died usually within the same general area during that time period. So, how would he have gone from Snave to settle in Dromore?
Thanks for your assistance and any further comments you might have!

Shane,
I should have mentioned that I did find the following Coakley records on irishgenealogy.ie, but no Michael amongst them...all in Lower Lissane, Caheragh:
David (1828) to Darby(AKA Jeremiah) Coakley & Cath Reagan
Ellen (1829) " "
Jerry (1833) " "
Denis (1836) " "
John & James (1838) " "
Catherine (1841) " "
Bridget (1844) " "
And then a William (1825) to Jerry Coakley & Nory Nihane (but I think it's Minihane) also in Lower Lissane, Caheragh.
IF ONLY there was a Michael because Michael's children were Mary, Jeremiah, Ellen, James Michael, and Catherine!
I also wonder IF Jeremiah had two wives given the birth date of William and David......Lower Lissane it not too far from Dromore.
A lot of speculation here!
Thanks!
