Looking for information for the family Callaghan from Lisleagh, Ballyclough. William Callaghan (my ggg grandfather--1805-1875), his wife Margaret Buckley (1818-?), son Michael (1838-1926) my gg grandfather-who emigrated to the US in 1858--landing in Mobile, Alabama--fought in the American Civil War--lived/died in East Liverpool, Ohio--Married Mary Desmond) and their daughter Ellen Callaghan. I found the Callaghan homestead, which is still standing! I used Griffiths Valuation. I cannot, however, find where William and Mary are buried! Or any other information about their lives there in Lisleagh, Ballyclough. Any help would be greatly appreciated! ~Kelly Callahan

  • Hi Kelly, we appear to have no one in the area and I can find no Facebook group dealing with history or genealogy specific to the are, there are probably ones dealing with Cork. You can get lucky sometimes on them but mostly not.

Assuming they were RC religion they were probably buried in the local graveyard (it could also be the Church of Ireland graveyard as this sometimes happened) Finding the graveyard is one thing and the grave another, back then head stones for the poor and not so poor were few and far between. It is my experience in other counties there has been a resurgence of interest in local history and headstone transcription if you could find one, like you are attempting here. My next thought is to email the library in Mallow, this would I think be nearest. https://www.corkcoco.ie/en/your-library/mallow-library

I also searched for Mallow history and got bits and pieces, learned the judge who tried Ned Kelly in Australia was from Ballyclough, famous in Australia and here in song. There is a site for Mallow which does paid research, I have used them in other counties, they look up their records etc of local graves (Mallow is nearest big town to Ballyclough I think) you may wish to enquire for a quote at least, http://mallowheritagecentre.com/ This group are the Irish Family History Foundation and have no connection with this site.

My guess is they were buried in the local graveyard of the time and you are unlikely to find a headstone, as I imagine you are aware civil registraton did not commence until 1864, I searched and found a death registered in Mallow in 1875 for William, unfortunatly as yet the register entry is not visible but you could have in emailed to yourself for about $5, not full cert if you are sure this is him, it would also state if he was widowed helping you narrow your search for Margaret, the entries are supposed to be free online soon but that has been said for awhile now. Thre will be no burial information on it. https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ select civil and sign in but it is free. The church records will not show him as I do not think county Cork is available as yet.

    Good Luck
