I am trying to identify the extended family of Jeremiah Calnan, b. c1795 supposedly in County Cork.  His parents have been identified as Jeremiah Calnan & Mary Ann Moore, and I have found a PRO Marriage Licence Bond entry for Jeremiah & Mary Ann Moore in the Diocese of Cork & Ross dated 1796 but cannot find any baptism information for any children.  Family lore has it that Jeremiah spent most of his youth in County Cork & Belfast.  He married in 1820 in St Matthew, Bethnal Green, London and emigrated to South Australia with his wife & 4 children in late 1836.  I am very keen to identify any siblings/cousins etc so that I can unravel some erroneous information relating to one of Jeremiah's sons.  Any suggestions re county/parish/township for this Calnan family would be greatly appreciated.  Cheers from Adelaide, South Australia.

  • Hi,

According to "Surnames of Ireland" by Dr. Edward MacLysaght, the name "Callinan" is associated with the MacCarthys of County Cork. Apparently there was another branch in County Galway. Variant spelling is "Callanan".

A cross check of the name Callinan/Callanan c1800 shows "Callanan" to be the dominent spelling in County Cork.

The difficulty with surnames in Ireland is that they are often recorded by persons who are not familiar with the name or spelling, so you can have a single family with different spellings of their surname. Jeremiah is a popular first name in County Cork.

  • Many thanks for confirming the variations.  I hadn't picked up on Galway so I'll head in that direction for a while.  Cheers
