Hi, I have been looking for a marriage of Thomas Cannon and Maria Smyth/Smith for some time now. They had Patrick Joseph Cannon in the 1850's. We were told this family came from the Elphin area. Last night I found a marriage for Thomas and Maria in Athboy, Meath. Would anyone know if these surnames are common? Not sure if this is them. Thank you for any assistance. Mary

Mary:
Cannon is a common surname in Co. Donegal. Leitrim, Mayo and Galway also had a good number of Cannons in the Mid-19th century.
Smyth/Smith was a very common surname in many counties including Co.Meath.
I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland but did not find any baptismal records for children of Thomas and Mary.
Possibly, the 1851 record is for a different couple and your Thomas and Mary were from a county and parish where records are not available back to the 1850s. Donegal church records are particularly difficult to locate pre-1860.
Did the family stay in Ireland?

Hi Roger, Patrick Joseph Cannon came to the United States in 1882 at the age of 23. Met his wife Mary Hanley on the ship. They married that same year. The marriage records state the Cannon/Smyth parents. No other family members came to the US. Family was told Patrick lived in elphin. I was able to find a parish in elphin. The priest let me look through the church records, but I was unable to find a record for Patrick. Been searching ever since. Happened to come by this record yesterday. Thought maybe. Thanks Roger for looking for me.
