Hello County Armagh Message Board,

I am researching several ancestors by the last name Moneypenny (variations include Monypeny) who came from either the Markethill area or from Carbenack, Carrowbrack area.

I found some information on www.familysearch.org that suggested my Moneypenny ancestors were born in "Carbenack, Carrowbrack, Co. Armagh". This was posted in the genealogy section of familysearch.org by a private user, so its accuracy is---naturally---suspect since no information was given on how this person found this information (no reference to parish records, just a "private" submission). My great-grandmother and her brother said that their grandmother was born near Markethill. Here is the information I found on familysearch.org.

---Born on 10th January 1778 at Carbenack, Carrowbrack, Co. Armagh, Charles Moneypenny.

---Born 23rd April 1823 at Carbenack, Carrowbrack, Co. Armagh, Jane, the daughter of Charles Moneypenny and Johanna Simpsons.

---Born on the 20th December 1830 at Carbenack, Carrowbrack, Co. Armagh, Charles, the son of Charles Moneypenny and Johanna Simpson.

If my research is correct, Carrowbrack refers to one of the older electoral divisions in County Armagh. I haven't found a parish or townland in County Armagh by the name of Carrowbrack or Carbenack. I've tried finding older maps of Ireland, but to no avail. So if Carrowbrack is an electoral division, then Carbenack has to be a village, a house, a farm, a street/road/lane within the Carrowbrack electoral division?

Has anyone on the message board heard of Carrowbrack or Carbenack? Are either anywhere near Markethill? I'm not sure if "Carbenack" is the correct spelling, so I've been trying to decipher it phonically by sounding it out... maybe Corbracky? Cornalack or Cornamucklagh? This is based on the idea that Carrowbrack was an electoral division around Portadown and Lurgan. I could be wrong. Again, I don't know where the other person found this information... parish records, civil records, etc. so I don't know what the handwriting would have looked like on the original documents---if any?

Thank you.

  • I cannot identify where Carbenack or Carrowbrack may be. Possibly it's garbled information.

    The tithes list a number of Moneypenny farms in the Markethill area in 1834. I see one for Charles in the townland of Corhammock, Perhaps that’s where your ancestors lived? (Corhammock and Carrowbrack sound a bit similar).

    The family looks very likely to have been Church of Ireland. Have you checked the local parish records for the family’s baptisms etc? Mullaghbrack Church of Ireland has the following records:

    Baptisms, 1764-83 and 1799-1811; marriages, 1767-83 and 1798-1811; deaths, 1732-62 (5 entries);

    In addition, the parish was split in 1832 and an extra church opened in Kilclooney. It’s records date from 1832. Copies of both sets of records in PRONI in Belfast.

  • Dear Elwyn,

    I agree. It could be garbled information from trying to decipher handwriting or blurred documents. I will look up PRONI and see if I can find the records you mentioned.

    Thank you very much for all your help.

  • The PRONI records are not on-line. They are in microfilm format and you need to get someone to go in person to look them up.
