  • GRONI has a death for Caroline Cassidy on 1.11.1940 aged 54. You can view the original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option. You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

I’d guess this is Caroline in 1901:

    and in 1911:

    Caroline’s marriage in 1911:

Given that Caroline’s husband was the editor so for many years, have you contacted the Belfast Telegraph to see if they have any photos of her.  She is mentioned in the Telegraph on 4.6.1934 winning a best kept dog award but they rarely had photos in those days. If the paper doesn’t have any photos I suspect family are likely to be the best source.

    Births of children:

    Frederick 10.3.1912

    William 10.3.1912

    Olive 11.4.1913

    Phyllis 4.1.1915

Can’t help with the burials. Surprisingly perhaps, Caroline's death doesn't appear to have been in the papers.

  • McCoy,

Thanks for that. I did think it odd that there wasn't a notice.

  • Leathem,

If you want to find a death certificate for Betty Cassidy and others who died in the 1980s or later you can contact GRONI. Their death certificates may provide more information on the families eg through the informants.

GRONI is the only repository for birth, death and marriage records in what is now Northern Ireland, from 1.1.1922 onwards. (Ancestry and other websites don’t have them).

Births in Northern Ireland within the past 100 years, marriages within the past 75 and deaths within the past 50 aren’t searchable on-line. They are open to the public, just not on-line. If you know all the key details eg exact date and place of birth, parents names etc, you can order a copy of a certificate from GRONI for £15 (sterling). https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

But if you don’t have all the information, you need to get in touch with them to get a search done.  They will do a 5 year search for £7 and if they find a matching certificate you can purchase it for £8, coming to a total of £15. It will be posted to you a few days later. You pay over the phone using a credit card. You type your number in on the phone keypad. They don’t know what it is.  They won’t deal with these searches and orders by e-mail or post because they need you to type the credit card number in yourself.

    Phone: 0300 200 7890 (+44 300 200 7890 from outside the UK)

Alternatively if you live near Belfast, you can go in person to either GRONI or PRONI (both in Belfast). They are the only places where you can search recent records, right up to those registered yesterday. You can view each cert there for £2.50, and if you want a certified copy it’s an extra £8. (Posted out in 2 to 3 weeks time).

At present (due to Covid) you may need to make an appointment for a personal visit to either PRONI or GRONI. See their websites for details.

You could also check PRONI’s records for any wills that the Cassidy family have left.

It’s not IRO policy to give out information on anyone who might still be alive. Sorry if that seems unhelpful but you will hopefully understand the reasoning. Not everyone wants to be contacted or have their details given out without their agreement.
