I am looking for information on my great grandfather John H. Carr who was born in County Monaghan in 1866/1867. He immigrated to the US in 1875. His parents were James and Elizabeth. He married Mary Murnaghan (Murnighan) who was born in the Boston area. Her parents were James and Anne who were from County Monaghan.
Any additional infromation will be appreciated.
Thanks
Rick Carr

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and located an 1858 John Carr baptismal record in Co. Monaghan with parents James and Anne. You mentioned emigration in 1875. Did he come to America with his parents or with friends. Unlikely a 9 year old would come without his parents which gives some credence to the 1858 record. Are you aware of siblings?
By the way, there are some RC parishes in Monaghan that don't have records back to 1867. Civil registration of births started in 1864.

Roger-thank for the quick response
I have a copy of the US Naturalization for John that indicates his birth was June 23, 1866 and that he was born in County Monahan.
The couple of US census records I have located in Boston area also indicate that his birth was 1866/1867. I can find no record of his father James
or mother Elizabeth in the US census so perhaps he came over with a relative

When I searched yesterday on Roots Ireland, I used the wrong name for the mother (Anne instead of Elizabeth). I went back and looked at all John Carr civil birth records in Ireland from 1864-1868. Civil registration for births started in 1864. I went thru all the records registered in Co. Monaghan registration districts and found two possible records. I think the first record from 1865 is your best lead. Mother was Eliza Shaw. I also went on Roots Ireland and found the related baptismal record. Also, Kerr and Carr were usually the same surname so don't be too concerned about the speling of the name. Did your John have any siblings?

Here is a link to the entry on the parish register. https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632793#page/20/mode/1up The register is in Latin and the record for John Kerr is on the left page halfway down.
