Hi everyone i'm hoping for a  bit of help.   Does anyone have any knowledge of the family of Rochford being in Carrick on suir or Carrickbeg or the surrounding area during the period 1800 to the 1840's.

I have found a marriage record in the Carrickbeg records April 1842 for the marriage of Johannis Rochford to Anastatia Daniel and i am wondering if this Johannis Rochford could have been related to Ellening Rochford who married Johannins Power probably circa 1840-1842 in Carrickbeg and for whom i can find no local marriage record.  Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Hello,

It looks like the register you consulted was written in Latin.  The men you mention would actually have been called John, and "Ellening" would have been Ellen.

RootsIreland shows three children for Ellen Power, the first baptized in 1845. If this was her first child, she may have married a little later than you thought.

  • Hi Patricia thanks for getting back to me- i think the one you mention is a different Ellen.  My great grandfather was Edmund who was baptised 25 dec 1843 in c'beg, his parents being the John Power and Ellen Ratch (or Rochford that i mentioned earlier.  In the register it looks like her maiden name was spelt as Ratch, however this may have been entry error or abbreviation.   I have never found the name surname of Ratch anywhere, so i looked exhaustively for alternatives such as Roache, Roche and any other possible names  i could think of, but nothing turned up.

However what i did find were births of Martin Bap C'beg 18/6/1848,  John (i've lost the details for John and need to look them up again!)  and Ellen bap 21/1/1853 C'beg.  In all cases the mothers maiden name was given as Rochford and i strongly suspect they were the siblings of my Grandfather  Edmund.,however before making too big an assumption i decided to seek a 2nd opinion

So i contacted Waterford Heritage Services who did some researching for me and also failed to find any mariage details for an Ellen Ratch/Roache etc , they also concluded that it was probably an abbbreviation (or missspelling) of Rochford and that the children i had found were the siblings of my Great Grandfather Edmund.

My hopes were that i could find something more if i explored the Rochford connection as this might provide further evidence and maybe find the marriage of an Ellening Rochford to Johnannis Power in one of the surrounding towns..

The entry ihat  i found in the 1842 cbeg register for the marriage of a Johannis Rochford to Ellen Daniel, suggests that there may have been Rochford's  in Cos or nearby and that perhaps this Johannis was a brother of my grandmother Ellen. But a search for the marriage of Johannis Power to an Ellening Rochford still  failed to find anything   (Wouldnt life be a lot simpler if there were not so many Johns and Ellens around!!!)

I've looked for the Rochford name in the 1901 census od CoS/c'beg but there are none, so it looks like the name had gone from the area by then.  There were quite lot of Rochfords in nearby Mullinahone in the 1901 census so maybe by then they moved to that area. So hence my appeals for info on Rochfords in the vicinty of Cos  in the hope that this may provide another lead - i live in hope but not expectation!.
