Norah Kennedy's 1910 passenger ship record lists her nearest relative as her father, John Kennedy.  This is just below the dark line on the enclosed attachment.  The family always lived just west of Castlegregory on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry.  In the 1901 census, the family was living in the townland of Barrack in the civil parish of Stradbally.   What is the placename where her father lives.  It looks something like "Slugvilla," Castlegregory.

It also lists her last permanent residence as Moyderwell.  I know that this is a neighborhood and also a street in Tralee.  I assume that Norah relocated to Moyderwell for work.

  • Hi Diane,
    You say............
In the 1901 census, the family was living in the townland of Barrack in the civil parish of Stradbally
Looking at that record .....  was this House number one?
    www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000860621/
John Kennedy was the head of the family, he was her Uncle. Her name was Flaherty.
They were the only record in Barrack.

I have looked at her sibling Ellen, then looked for Honoria's birth see the attached below.
Killiney is the townland where  Norah was born.
Also as Timothy was a widow I looked for her Mother's death also below.

  • Hi Margot,

There was only one house in Barrack.  In 1901 my grandmother, Norah Kennedy, was not living with her parents who were John and Mary Kennedy.  She must have been working somewhere else, possible Moyderwell, Tralee.  The Timothy Flaherty living in this same house in Barrack was John Kennedy's brother-in-law.  He was a widower.  The 3 Flaherty girls listed in the house were Timothy's children.  So Honorah Flaherty is a 1st cousin of my grandmother, Norah Kennedy.

The placename that I'm asking about is listed on her 1910 passenger ship record which I attached.  Her information is right under the dark line.  It lists her father as John Kennedy and it lists a place that I'm not familiar with.

Killiney is the name of the Catholic parish.  The Flaherty children were born in Castlegregory which is in the Catholic parish of Killiney.

The information that I initially provided was probably confusing.  My main question is about the placename on the passenger ship record.  Were you able to open the attached file included in the first message?

  • That's a very interesting question.  There's a civil record that states that Honoria Kennedy was born Nov 16, 1880 in Scriggane to John Kennedy and Mary Kearney but no matching baptismal record.

There is a baptismal record that states that Honoria Kennedy was born Nov 16, 1884 from Scriggane to John Kennedy and Mary Kearney but no 1884 civil record.

I realize that it was not unusual for people to give another baby the same name as one who died but it seems very strange that the date of birth would be the exact same.  Also if the 1880 baby lived long enough to have a civil record, there would also be a baptismal record.

To make it even more confusing, in the margin of the 1889 church book is a note stating that Honoria was born December 1889 and that she's now marrying Patrick Foley in Springfield, Massachusetts.  She was baptised in a different church than her siblings.  All the siblings were baptised in Castlegregory but she was baptised in Cloghane.  My theory is that the priest in Castlegregory couldn't find her baptismal record when she wanted to get married so Homoria told the priest that she was born in Dec 1889 which made her a year younger than her husband.  I think she was actually older than him.

  • Hi Diane,
Why I asked about Norah's birth year is to establish what her mothers maiden name was.
It was stated that John Kennedy had his brother in law in the Census in Barrack. John Kennedy and Mary..................
So is it Kearny or Flaherty?

When someone marries overseas,  they have to have a letter of Freedom from their Parish Priest, then this is entered into the Parish Book next to the Baptism.
Not all records are updated with who they marry. Safeguard for any claims on second marriages.
