On the 1881 and 1891 UK census my 3x great grandparents Thomas Brown and Ellen Brown  (maiden name Callaghan from Cork) are living in Sun Yard Eltham. They are living in the same address as John and Catherine Barry with children all from Cork like Ellen. I’m trying to work out if Catherine Barry is Ellen’s sister with a maiden name of Callaghan. I know the father of Ellen is Timothy Callaghan. Ellen was born around 1831/2. So far I can’t find anything connecting Ellen with Catherine. Any help is appreciated!

  • This might be the couple on the UK census:

    Marriage:        11-Feb-1839

    Parish of Kanturk, Co. Cork

John  Barry,    Catherine Callahan, both R.C.

    Witnesses: John Callahan, Mary Callahan

    Priest: Rev James Ryan

    Thanks Patricia

can you read their ages on the 1891 census as I’m having trouble … I wondered if this marriage would be too early to match them??!

  • I think they’re 65 in 1891 so makes them around 1826 for year of birth roughly… a little young for 1839 marriage??? I know we can never be sure of the ages!

Callahan and Barry probably common names there?

Is it worth searching under O’Callahan… did the Irish shorten it when they arrived in England?

  • Alas, I think you are right --they were too young to be the 1839 couple.

Did Irish drop the O in UK? Maybe some did.

The rootsireland search engine provides variations of surnames when you search on a surname, so O'Callahan and Callahan would both appear.

  • Hi Patricia

I found the Barry children on birth records and their mother was Cleary not Callaghan. So not sisters… Just Cork people sticking together!

  • It's still possible they were related--maybe cousins.

    Hello

All I know is my 3x get grandma from Cork (Ellen Brown nee Callaghan) was living in Sun Yard. Someone suggested that her and Catherine may have been cousins or something. John Barry and Catherine ( nee Cleary) were from Timoleague Cork. Johanna born 1875 in the same place. Catherine and/or John Barry maybe related to my Ellen Callaghan as she was also from Cork.

    regards

  • There is a marriage for John Barry and Catherine Cleary on Feb 24 1857 in Clonakilty. You see I’m trying to find where in Cork my Ellen Callaghan was born and if the Barry’s, the Clearys  sand the Callaghan’s are linked it could be that my Ellen was from Clonakilty. Roger on this site found the marriage.

  • Hello

I'm not sure how you get the marriage cert from Ireland.
I put the document about Johana’s birth on here. The Barry’s were living next door to my 3x great grandma Ellen Callaghan in Sun Yard Eltham.

I was trying to find out if Ellen and the Barry’s were connected as Ellen Callaghan was also from Cork.

    regards
