Catherine Mary Butler was born in 1846 in Clonmel, Tipperary.
She was Roman Catholic and family history says that as a small child she worked in a laundry. She was so young she had to stand on a chair. It has also been said that she was a Tipperary Stone thrower.....My grandmother said the girls wielded a stocking with a stone in the bottom when walking in the remote countryside to ward off any attackers!
Catherine emigrated to New Zealand where she married and had children. I believe that she came out to work in Canterbury.
She died in Dunedin in December 1899.y

Karen:
I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and found three possible leads for your Catherine.
Catherine Butler baptized May 26 1845 St. Mary's Clonmel father David Butler mother Maria McGrath
Catherine Butler baptized September 19 1845 Sts. Peter and Paul Clonmel father Michael Butler mother Ellena Shea
Catherine Butler baptized August 18 1847 St. Mary's Clonmel father Patrick Butler mother Catherine Brett
Are you aware of any siblings? Let me know if you have any questions.

That is fantastic!
No sadly I don't know if there were any siblings and as the names of both parents are not the same as what was on recorded I am a little unsure how to proceed? Any thoughts?
I did however find the name Bridget Noonan - informant and cousin of the child - on a birth certificate of son William born in October 1876 - Catherine said to be 31 then. Strangely in 1879 when she gave birth to a daughter her age was given as 37! A Catherine Keane is the godparent of one of the children. i do not know if this is a relative. Catherine's death certificate says she was 58 when she died in December 1899. So the range of ages is widening and could be as early as 1841.
Many many thanks

I have sent away for the marriage licence of the niece who was the "informant" following the birth of one of Catherine's children. Hopefully that will come up with the bride's parents ! Until then I have no documentary evidence who Catherine's parents actually were.
Thank you very much for all of this
