I am trying to find details of birth and family and immigration to Australia.

Information I have:

Catherine Mary Cantwell Marriage Certificate celebrated at Bendigo, Victoria Australia, to John Gordon from England, on 9 August 1853. Age about 20 years old. No further details on certificate.

On each of their eleven children's birth certificates she states her birth country as Carrick on Suir, Tipperary, Ireland.

On her death certificate dated 19 July 1918 in the where born column is "Carrick, County Clare, Ireland" 68 years in Australia. There is no reference anywhere of parents. It also states 68 years in Australia. (Arrival possibly 1850??)

Hi Lizzie, This is what I found........
Catherine was 10 when she went to Australia with her family.
Philip is her father and Bridget is her Mother plus other information.
The place is Latteragh, different spellings so I checked for grave in Ireland and saw this......

This is the front page showing Cantwell in that area, other relatives.

There is also a Thomas but his name is Contwell, but we know it should be Cantwell.
I looked at the page doc. and have corrected it to Cantwell. Takes time to have it corrected by the site.

There are more Cantwell records in this site

The two maps below are of Latteragh and Glenkeen, on the ship record it says Glenkeale, it is Glenkeen.  Town land next to each other.

I hope this helps.    Have you by any chance got a s Stephen Cantwell?

  • Hi,
About the discrepancy between the children's birth records and Catherine's death certificate...I would definitely go by Tipperary, as that is information supplied over and over by Cath herself. She did not, obviously, provide the information on her death certificate; it was provided by a third party.
Also, ages in old records vary wildly for the same person. Was she really ten at the time of immigration? or did someone write down the wrong age? or did her parents lie about her age to get a lower fare (assuming it wasn't assisted emigration)?
At RootsIreland, you can see the following transcription of a baptism for a Catherine Cantwell in Carrick on Suir...Don't know if it is the one you are looking for...father is Richard.

  • Hello Margot,

    Thank you very much.

Yes, I have a copy of this ship "Emily" arriving  11 Sept 1850 in Australia. On the ship records it says Richard and Mary (dcd) Philip's parents and Daniel and Mary Barkley?? (not clear) - father of Bridget living at Garringrana?? (not clear). Also states: Relatives -a brother of Philip living at Port Phillip, Victoria, 3 brothers-in-law, 3 cousins and a nephew and niece already in Australia. New South Wales Assisted Immigrant 1828-1896.

I was unsure if this was the Catherine Mary Cantwell because of the birth date.

I don't have any info on a Stephen Cantwell.

I also had the Baptism of Catherine Cantwell 18 Apr 1823, Carrick-on-Suir,  Father Richard Cantwell and mother Bridget Ellis.

  • Hello Patricia,

Thank you for your information on Catherine Cantwell.

I did have this Baptism record noted with father Richard and mother Bridget Ellis but once again the date threw me!

Good point about the discrepancy of her age on immigration form.

I have been trying to follow on with the info of each family member here but don't seem to find any concrete material. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places.

    Thanks again,

    Lizzie
