Dear Sir/Madam
I would like locate a specific ancestral homestead, in Glascloune/Glascloone, County Clare. I have narrowed it down to House 4, occupied by Catherine McMahon (head of household) and her family in the 1901 census, attached, and also recorded as House 15, occupied by Catherine McMahon and her family in the 1911 census, attached. Please could you assist me to find out exactly where this ancestral home is/was located? Can you tell me how to go about this?
I have accessed the Griffith's Valuation map and, using that, I have located the two houses occupied by other members of the McMahon extended family, Patrick (house 8 in 1901) and then Timothy (house 19 in 1911) in one house as well as John (1901) and John (1911) in the ohter. But I am unable to identify which house, as indicated on the Griffith's Valuation map and more recent maps, including google maps, Catherine and her family occupied. I anticipate that between 1856 and 1901, Edmond McMahon or his son Michael McMahon, the husband of Catherine, might have obtained occupation of some other house held by one of the other surnames recorded in Griffith's Valuation. Going by the order in which the census official recorded the households in the 1901 return, it seems that the house might have been that held by Mary Kelly (listed as 5 in Griffith's Valuation)? Or a new house in that vicinity? But I cannot be sure.
Is there some digital/online record available of exactly which house was occupied by Catherine McMahon in 1901 and 1911? Or a record of property transactions and people's respective holdings between 1850 and 1900?
Thank you. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Lienne Sharrock.

Hi Lienne,
There is no online site which will give you information on occupancy in the years you are researching.
Clare County Council Archives - www.clarecoco.ie - may have some records in regard to who was responsible for the payment of rates. Most dwellings in that period were constructed of loose stone and mortar and were liable to be replaced or extended on the marriage of a family member.
I suggest that you make contact with a person from the area of Doonbeg who would make inquiries for you.

McCoy

Hi McCoy,
Thank you! The Clare Council website is very helpful! I have been able to access valuable information about fairly recent owners of the properties via the planning permissions map. I will continue to glean more from other parts of the site, I have no doubt. Great - thank you for bringing us closer to finding our family's ancestral home.
